WICHITA, KANSAS- In the rematch doubleheader against the Newman Jets did not go in the Rangers favor as the Jets swept Northwestern to complete the season sweep over the Rangers four games to zero. In game one of the afternoon Newman won behind a five run inning after answering the Rangers big inning before silencing a comeback by the Rangers after loading the bases.
The first inning of the first game was scoreless for both Lady Rangers and Jets. Northwestern faced a 3-0 deficit against Newman with a three run second inning. Today's starting pitcher Shakyrah Gladness was the starting pitcher before being relieved midway through the second inning and Ireland Caro took the reins on the mound.
Her first inning on the mound she struckout the side for everyone faced that inning, her 39th of the season. Lady Jets had bases loaded before center fielder Macy Spearman to close out Newman's batting completing the last out.Â
Third inning was quiet for both teams as there was only one hit allowed, a single hit by opposing team. The first error of the game was made Northwestern, but defensive stance still allowed zero scoring.
Top of the fourth was a 5-run inning for Northwestern, beginning with a single from Laney Anderson. First two runs were unearned off an error made by Newman. Jaci Oakley doubled to center, answering back to the batting momentum created by Anderson. With two on base, single hit by Spearman resulted in third RBI of the inning. Two more RBI's were complete off single to left field from Abby DeTar. Going into the bottom of the fourth was a lead for Lady Rangers of 5-3.
Newman answered back to Lady Rangers with a 5-run inning of their own notoriously off of two hits and three errors made by Northwestern. Fifth and sixth innings was short for both, leaving each half in order.
One more more run was scored in top of the seventh by Lady Rangers with bases loaded and batter Lindsey McElroy was walked to first. Newman than escaped further damage silencing the Ranger comeback attempt as the First game ended 8-6.
Spearman began the second game with a lead off double into center field, and DeTar hit sacrifice bunt to advance her to third but the Rangers were unable to score. Newman was up 2-0 immediately following off an NWOSU error in the first as the Jets took a 2-0 lead.
No action was made by Lady Rangers in second inning except for single hit made by Madeline Pack one of two for the game. Lady Jets earned their third run of the game off a wild pitch, and pitcher Hannah Howell ended the inning with strikeout.
First score of the game for Northwestern was made after an advancement to second off a wild pitch; and Howell hit double sending runner home. Newman answered back again with a two-run inning, clinching four hits alone. for a 4-1 lead.
Pack got her second hit of the game in the top of the fourth, the only action made by either team within the inning. Double play made by Avery Clark to DeTar notably sealed the scoreless inning.
Final run of the game was scored in the bottom of fifth by Newman, after the only triple was hit by Lady Jets. Ashley Low had single to center in their sixth attempt batting but fell short to score. Howell hit double in top of seventh but ended the game 6-2 in favor of Newman.
Lady Rangers will continue their road-game series at the end of the week in Searcy, Arkansas to take on Harding University. Doubleheader will begin on Friday March 24th, with first pitch at 4:00pm.Â
