Rangers Drop Game One of Series to the Bisons

ALVA, OKLAHOMA - The Rangers returned home Friday evening for the opening game of a three game series. Harding won 3-2 scoring the go ahead runs in the top of the ninth inning on a 2-RBI double.The Rangers drop to 13-16 on the season with a 6-10 conference record following Friday's game.

Cole Rodriguez received the opening game start for the series as he threw 7.0 innings allowing one unearned run while striking out six Bisons. Cade Phelps relieved him, throwing two innings allowing one earned run. 

Offensively for the Rangers Gavin Mendoza and Paul Sachen led the team with two hits, while Sachen and Harley Shaffer had an RBI each. Shaffer hit a solo home run his fifth home run of the season. 

In the top of the first inning Rodriguez retired the side in order with two strikeouts to start the inning. Two innings were played without a single hit before the Ranger offense switched the momentum with a solo home run from Harley Shaffer to take a 1-0 lead for the Rangers. 

Northwestern held the 1-0 lead as Rodriguez did not allow his first hit until the fourth inning on a single to left field. He then got Martinez to ground into a double play for the first two outs before a fly out to left field ended the inning. 

The score remained 1-0 into the fifth inning when Helms reached second on an error to start the game before Newsom hit an RBI groundout to shortstop to tie the game at one. Rangers pushed runners on first and second in the bottom half of the inning but were unable to regain the lead in the fifth inning.

Both teams went down in order in the sixth inning before the Rangers regained the lead in the seventh. Brayden Koenig led off the inning with a double before a Paul Sachen single scored Koenig for a 2-1 Ranger lead through seven innings. 

Rodriguez allowed a leadoff double before Cade Phelps entered the game working around the leadoff double, picking up a strikeout to hold the Ranger lead at 2-1.

Harding answered though in the ninth inning after a leadoff walk and an error put runners on first and second. A sacrifice bunt moved them to second and third before a 2-RBI double to left center field scored two runs for a 3-2 Harding lead. 

Northwestern had the tying run on first in the ninth on a walk by Sachen but a strikeout closed out the win for Harding 3-2 over the Rangers taking the first game of the three game series.
