Ranger Volleyball 17 Blocks Lead Way to Match Win over Bison

Alva, Oklahoma- Ranger Volleyball returned home for their second conference match of the season. Northwestern jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first two sets before taking the match in four sets with 3-1 win over the Bison.

The Rangers win their second consecutive conference match to start GAC play and improve to 5-7 on the season with a 2-0 record in conference. The Bison fall to 6-6 on the season and 0-1 in the GAC.

Northwestern was led by Erika Asencio Soriano with 21 kills, Cameron Lobb five aces and 45 assists, Brianda Diaz 24 digs and Carmae Jones with four blocks.

Set One:

The first three points of the match were awarded to the Lady Bison. The Lady Rangers found themselves on the scoreboard, scoring 1-4. After a few point exchanges, freshman Ivanny Blackwood sent a massive kill over the net, scoring for the Rangers (3-5) as Northwestern gained momentum. Ece Ozdemir tied the score with a kill (7-7). Cameron Lobb and Erika Acencio Soriano made back-to-back plays furthering the Lady Ranger score taking the first lead of the set. Cameron Lobb taps the ball in the Lady Bison's gap, putting the Rangers up (11-10). The score furthered in the Lady Ranger's favor after the Lady Bison hit the net.. With another assist by Lobb, Blackwood sent another kill over the net for a 16-12 lead. A huge block by Mariela Jimenez and Blackwood forced the Bison into their first timeout of the set (17-12). Jimenez sent a memorable kill over the net, adding another point to the Ranger total (20-14). Jones added another point on the board with a block, followed by Soriano with a kill (24-18). The set ended with a block by Jones and Blackwood (25-19) as the Rangers took a 1-0 match lead. 

Set Two: 

The first point of the second set was taken by the Rangers with a block by Jones and Blackwood keeping the momentum with the Rangers to start set two. The Bison answered the score by putting a point on the board. Blackwood put two more points on the board with back-to-back kills (4-1). Jiminez sent a kill over net furthering the score to 7-3. Then again, Jiminez for the point (8-4). The Lady Bison took their first timeout of the set after the Rangers advanced the score 10-4. The Lady Bison scored the next 3 points of the set, putting the Lady Rangers into their first timeout. Ascencio Soriano had another big kill (12-9). Blackwood effortlessly found another gap in the Bison defense, scoring another point 15-10. Assisted by Brianda Diaz, Ozdemir scored again for the Rangers and put the Bison into their last timeout of the set (18-12). The Lady Bison regrouped and scored the next three points of the set, (18-15) as the Rangers took their final timeout. Ozedimir ended the Bison streak with a kill though out of the timeout. Soriano scored with a kill, totaling the score to 21-19. Blackwood added a point to the total. Blackwood put the crowd on their feet with a kill (24-21) setting Jimenez up to end the second set with a block. This final score of set two was  25-22 in favor of the Rangers to gain a 2-0 match lead. 

Set Three:

The Bison scored first in the third set. After a long rally, the Rangers put themselves on the board. A serve into the net ended the Bisons score streak (3-6). Jiminez scores with a kill and advances the score 5-7. The Bison scored, but the score was overruled by a yellow card (9-9). Then after a bison score, the bison tied the game for the Rangers with a serve into the net 10-10. Soriano scored another point with a kill (11-12). Jones blocked the Bison's ball, furthering the score 12-13. Blackwood matched a Bison point with a kill (13-14). Blackwood tied the game with another kill. Jiminez, matching the energy, sent a kill of her own over the net. Another point was added to the Lady Ranger total due to an error of rotation for the bison. Soriano sent the Bison into a timeout after a score that took the lead 18-17. Soriano put the ball to sleep with a huge block scoring, then immediately after adding a point to the total with a kill (20-17). The Lady Bison scored twice but lost their streak to an error (21-20). Lobb found a huge gap in the Bison's formation. Soriano's big kill put the score 23-21. Three Bison points made the score 23-24 and forced the Rangers into a timeout. A Bison kill finalized the score 23-25 extending the match as the Rangers led 2-1. 

Set Four: 

Soriano scored the first point of the set. The Lady Rangers went on a 5-0 run making the score 6-0 before the Bison finally got on the board. Soriano answered the Bison point by not letting Oklahoma Baptist back in the set. Another Bison point was met by a Blackwood kill. OBU took the opportunity for a timeout. Ozdemir advanced the score 11-5. Jiminez blocked the Bison's attempt (12-5).  An ace by Jiminez forced OBU into their second timeout (14-6). Assisted by Mikayla White, Jones laid one into the defense of the bison (15-7). Blackwood added a point by kill (17-7). Not finished, Blackwood sent another kill over scoring again: 18-9. After a Bison point, the Rangers scored again by kill (19-10). A nice kill from OBU advanced the Bison's total: 20-13. The Lady Rangers took a timeout. After the timeout, Blackwood scored with a huge kill (21-14). A block gone wrong for the Bison improved the Ranger's score 23-14. Jimenez scored deep in Bison territory. The Bison finalized the score by serving into the net. 25-15 for the set and a 3-1 Ranger win for the match. 

This is the Rangers first win over Oklahoma Baptist in the regular season since 2018. However, the second consecutive win counting the conference tournament back in November of 2022. 

Northwestern will finish the week in Bethany, Oklahoma with a match against Southern Nazarene at 6:00 PM in the Sawyer Center.
