WEATHERFORD, OKLAHOMA - Northwestern Lady Rangers traveled to Weatherford, Oklahoma this Thursday evening to face the Southwestern Lady Bulldogs. Faith Simpson was the leading scorer for the Lady Rangers helping the Lady Rangers to a 66-52 victory. Simpson with a career high 44 pts, and 16 reb, along with 2 blocks.
Northwestern advances to a 16-3 record and an 8-3 conference record. Southwestern Oklahoma State drops to 9-8 on the season.
Faith Simpson led with 44 pts, 16reb, and 2 blk; C. Craig had 7pts along with 6ast and 2stl; C. Thomas 7pts, 11reb; Tegan Jones 6pts, 2reb.
1st Quarter:
The Lady Rangers opened the first quarter with Faith Simpson's back-to-back points in the paint which gave the Rangers a lead 4-0 to start the game. Simpson was able to score six of the first seven points for the Lady Rangers. In the eighth minute Southwestern hit a three for their first points. A couple possessions later Camille Thomas converted a three point play. After the eighth Faith Simpson's point Southwestern Bulldogs were forced to call a timeout with the Lady Rangers up by seven points. After the timeout Bulldogs seemed to be more aggressive on defense and made the Rangers turn the ball over multiple times climbing back into the game with eight straight points to cut their deficit to one at the end of the quarter. At the end of the quarter the score was 12-11 in favor of the Lady Rangers.
2nd Quarter:
The Bulldogs started the second quarter with a three which put them up by two points for the first lead of the game. However, Faith Simpson continued where she left off in the first quarter answering with a shot in the paint and the score was tied. The next possession Tegan Jones made a basket to put the Rangers up by two but shortly after that the Bulldogs Cantrell answered with a three. Carly Craig added her first points of the game with a floater in the sixth minute of the quarter. Before a timeout Tegan Jones added another layup for the Lady Rangers and Northwestern was up by three points. After the timeout the Bulldogs went on a 5-0 run but it didn't take long for F. Simpson answered with a basket. This basket was her 12th point of the half and her 2,000th career collegiate point as the Lady Rangers went into halftime being up by four points at 30-26.
3rd Quarter:
Another two points for Faith Simpson to begin the second half of the game. Grant added two points to the scoreboard for Bulldogs keeping the game close. The Lady Rangers were up by four points at 32-28. Simpson converted the three point play for her 25th point of the game. Carly Craig made her first three pointer of the game and gave Rangers a 12 point lead before the media timeout. After a few missed shots for the Bulldogs J. Johnson added two points. With two minutes left to play in the third quarter F. Simpson scored her 30th point and Rangers were up by 14. The Bulldog's R. Berkey answered with a three on the next possession to cut the Lady Rangers lead back into single digits for a 49-40 lead.
4th Quarter:
Northwestern started the last quarter with another bucket from F. Simpson which was her 34th point of the game. H. Grant successfully scored her layup in the next possession. The Lady Bulldogs kept countering each Lady Rangers run to keep the Northwestern lead around eight to nine points before Payton Jones scored her first points at the line. C. Cantrell added her second three of the game and Bulldogs were trailing by eight points. F. Simpson added a couple more free-throws to make the lead bigger. M. Jones scored her first three pointer of the game to cut the Rangers lead to six points 56-50. With F. After Simpson's another two sets of free-throws, Rangers got the 10 point lead and that was her 41st point. Southwestern Bulldogs were struggling with their shots. Tegan Jones scored her sixth point of the game keeping the Lady Rangers out in front. Simpson closed out the win for the Lady Rangers with four straight foul shots for the 66-52 victory. The first win in Weatherford during the Division II era.
The Lady Rangers will be back in action on Saturday afternoon against East Central for the annual Hall of Fame game with tip-off set for 1:00 PM.
