Ranger Volleyball Completes Season Sweep Over East Central

ADA, OKLAHOMA - The Ranger Volleyball team traveled to Ada, Oklahoma for a Thursday evening match-up against the Tigers. After dropping the first set Northwestern took over the match winning the next three sets for a 3-1 match victory completing the season sweep over the Tigers.

Northwestern with the win improves to 13-11 on the season with a 7-5 conference record, while East Central drops to 14-12 with a 8-4 GAC record. 

The Rangers were led by Erika Asencio Soriano with 17 kills followed by Ece Ozdemir with 11. Hennesys Lalane finished with 42 digs on the evening. Brianda Diaz had 24 digs. 

Asencio Soriano started the match with a kill for the first point of the evening. Four ties to 4-4 before back to back blocks for the Rangers gave Northwestern a 6-4 lead. The teams then traded 2-0 runs as Northwestern kept the 8-6 lead following Tiger errors. With the Rangers leading 11-9 the Tigers answered with a 4-0 run on three kills and a Tiger error for the 13-11 lead over the Rangers. The set featured a tie at 14-14 before another 4-0 run by the Tigers pushed the home team in front 20-16. Northwestern then rattled off five straight points led by a kill from Carmae Jones and two service aces by Brianda Diaz as the Rangers regained the lead at 21-20. However East Central then scored five straight points to take set one 25-21. East Central won the set to take a 1-0 match lead over the Rangers. 

Erika Asencio Soriano once more led the set off with a kill for the early 1-0 lead. The Rangers battled back and forth from three ties as East Central took a 5-3 lead. Ece Ozdemir then started a run with back to back kills for the Rangers to tie the set. The run continued as the Rangers scored 10 straight points after a block by Ece Ozdemir and two more kills as the Ranges grabbed a 13-5 lead over the Tigers. East Central tried to answer with four straight points but a kill by Hennesys Lalane ended the run and kept the Rangers in front 14-9. This sparked another Ranger run, this time 5-0 with three kills by Asencio Soriano taking an 18-9 lead over East Central. The home team scored seven straight then to bring the Ranger lead down to two at 18-16. It was a service error by the TIgers helped the Rangers end the run before opening a 23-18 lead. East Central again cut their deficit to two before a kill by Ozdemir and Lalane closed out the 25-22 set victory evening the match at 1-1.

The Rangers struck with the first two points of the third set with a kill by Erika Asencio Soriano, and Carmae Jones both assisted by Lalane. The Rangers never trailed in set three as after East Central got the deficit back to one the Rangers sparked by an Ozdemir kill scored five straight for a 7-2 lead over the Tigers. The Rangers continued to push the momentum, holding a strong lead going in front 12-6 over the Tigers East Central climbed back to three at 13-10. The team continued to trade back and forth before a 4-0 Ranger run on a kill by Ivanny Blackwood had the Rangers back in front by eight at 23-15. After East Central had cut the Ranger lead to five Northwestern closed out the set win 25-19 following a kill by Lalane for a 2-1 match lead.

A service ace by Hennesys Lalane started the fourth set to give the Rangers a 1-0 lead. East Central then took a 4-3 lead after scoring three straight. The set was tied 5-5 before the Rangers used a 4-0 run started by a Mariela Jimenez kill for a 6-5 lead before taking a 10-5 lead over the Tigers. East Central could not get closer than four at 12-8 in favor of the Rangers, Northwestern got three more in a row taking a 15-8 lead. A kill by Lalane had the Rangers in front 20-12 Two service aces by Jimenez and a kill by Ascencio Soriano had the Rangers in front 23-15 before back to back Asencio Soriano kills gave the Rangers a 25-16 set victory and a 3-1 match road victory.

Northwestern will be back home on Monday evening with a matchup against Southern Nazarene with the match scheduled to start at 6PM.
