LAWTON, OKLAHOMA - Northwestern Oklahoma State traveled to Lawton for a non-conference game against Cameron. After the Lady Rangers came out strong in the opening minutes of the game working a double digit lead in the first half. A 11-0 run in the second half start for the Aggies pushed the home team in front before holding on to an 82-78 win over the Rangers.
Northwestern drops to 2-3 on the season in non-conference play while Cameron improves to an even 2-2 record.Â
The Lady Rangers were led on Monday by Payton Jones with 19 points, eight rebounds, three assists, and two steals. She was one of four players in double figures joined by Camille Thomas with 17, Kennedy Hight with 17 and Kira Bass 12 points. Thomas added seven rebounds, three steals, and a block. Carly Craig led Northwestern with nine assists.Â
Cameron opened the game with the first points before Camille Thomas hit the Lady Rangers first shot to even the score before Northwestern jumped on the Aggies early in the game. This started a 10-2 run for the Rangers as a jump shot by Kennedy Hight gave the Rangers the six point lead after four straight points from Kira Bass. Northwestern's largest lead of the quarter was at nine after Payton Jones scored her fourth point of the game, off Carly Craig's second assist. Bass and Jones led the way in the quarter for Northwestern each with six points as the Lady Rangers controlled a 22-14 lead at the end of the first quarter.Â
The Lady Rangers, like in the first quarter, controlled the opening minutes of the quarter as Kennedy Hight started things with a three pointer assisted by Payton Jones as the lead was pushed back to nine. After a Cameron three cut it back to six High and Camille Thomas each made layups extending the lead to double digits for the first time of the evening. After the lead was 29-19 the Aggies scored eight straight as Northwestern's lead was cut to 29-27. Carly Craig sparked the run for the Lady Rangers hitting a three pointer before a couple of foul shots pushed the lead back to 10. The run continued for the Rangers extending it to 10-0 run giving the Lady Rangers a 39-27 lead over Cameron. After a Jaida Shipp layup pushed the lead to 13, the largest at the time, Grace Alverson of Cameron drilled a three pointer before the half as the Northwestern lead was cut to 10 at 41-31 heading into halftime.Â
Cameron started the third quarter on a run as Alverson hit a three pointer followed by a layup and a second Cameron three pointer as Northwestern had the lead trimmed to two. After an offensive foul Alverson hit a three pointer her third of the half to give Cameron their first lead since the first quarter taking a 42-41 lead over the Rangers. With the Aggies leading 44-42 Carly Craig pushed the Rangers back in front with a three pointer at 45-44. The teams battled back and forth trading baskets holding the one point lead before Caemron hit a three pointer as Kira Bass answered with a layup as Northwestern trailed 54-51 at the end of the third quarter.Â
Lady Rangers looking to steal back the momentum found the first basket of the fourth quarter as Kira Bass finished a layup assisted by Craig, one of her nine total assists. Cameron though drilled a three pointer by Madison Griggs, but Camille Thomas answered with a three point play as the Lady Rangers trailed by one. Hight tied the game at 60-60 before Bass put the Rangers in front 62-60. The Aggies scored seven straight though to take a 69-62 lead. The home team continued to control the fourth quarter holding the seven point lead until 77-70 when the Lady Rangers brought back the score to 78-76 and later 80-78 getting the deficit back down to two twice. Cameron though took care of business at the foul line late with five straight foul shots to seal the 82-78 win over Northwestern.Â
The Lady Rangers have one final non-conference game on Saturday afternoon against Friends University before starting conference play on Thursday December 5th.
