CLAREMORE, OKLAHOMA - Northwestern Oklahoma State baseball traveled to Rogers State for a mid-week non conference game in Claremore. In a pitchers duel the two teams battled it out to a 3-2 final score in favor of the HIllcats.
Northwestern falls to 11-5 on the season following the loss.
The Rangers looked to score early after a leadoff double by Dylan Bradford followed by a walk set up first and second but a double play ball helped the Hillcats escape any damage in the inning. Rangers' starting pitcher Drew Price matched the scoreless inning.
The game remained 0-0 into the third inning when Rogers State struck first a single and moved runners to first and third it set up a sacrifice fly for the 1-0 lead and the first run of the game.
Northwestern's offense did not waste any time striking back as the Rangers loaded the bases in the inning setting up Zach Vetal for a single back into center field for the Rangers first runs of the game for a 2-1 lead over Rogers State.
After back to back walks set up first and second a ground ball double play started by Jacob Wiltshire ended the inning and kept the Rangers in front through four innings.
The Hillcats were able to tie the game in the fifth inning with a single to left field after a sacrifice bunt moved the runner into scoring position for the 2-2 game through five innings.
Northwestern had a scoring opportunity in the seventh inning after an error-hit by pitch- and a walk setup the bases loaded before a fielder's choice and a ground out kept the game tied at 2-2.
It was in the bottom of the 8th inning when Rogers State offense struck again and this time was for the final run of the game. A lead-off single came around to score two batters later on a single by Tiger to give Rogers State a 3-2 lead.
The Rangers put the tying run on second base in the ninth inning but were unable to score the tying run as Rogers State held on for the 3-2 win over the Rangers.
Northwestern will return to conference play over the weekend with a three game series at Oklahoma Baptist in Shawnee, Oklahoma.
