Rangers 7th Inning Comeback Falls Short in Series Finale

PIEDMONT, OKLAHOMA - Northwestern Oklahoma State Softball closed out the three game series with Southeastern Oklahoma State on Friday afternoon with a 5-4 loss to the Savage Storm after a 7th inning comeback fell short. Southeastern scored three in the top of the seventh before the Rangers answered with one and fell by one run.

The Rangers drop to 12-20 on the season with a 4-16 Great American Conference record following the loss.

The Rangers led on offense by Madeline Pack and Macy Spearman each with two hits in the game. Rachel Sherwood had a team high 2-RBI's both coming on her third home run of the season.

After both teams went down in order in the first inning the Rangers offense struck in the second inning in a tie 0-0 game. Laney Anderson led off the inning with a single to left field leading to the next hitter Rachel Sherwood going deep with a blast to right field for a 2-run home run for the 2-0 lead for the Rangers.

Southeastern came back with one in the third inning after a lead off single led to an RBI single by Harlow through the right side scoring Beard, as the Rangers led 2-1. The Savage Storm looked to tie the game in the fourth inning after a walk and a single led the inning leading to a line drive double play helping the Rangers out of the inning holding the 2-1 lead.

The fifth inning Southeastern tied the game at 2-2 as Ore had a one out single followed by a walk which led to Taylor hitting an RBI single scoring Ore and setting up a new ball game with a 2-2 tie. In the bottom of the inning the Rangers had a runner on second as Pack led off with a single but were not able to score as back to back pop ups kept the game tied 2-2.

The Rangers offense struck again in the sixth inning as Northwestern regained the lead. Macy Spearman led off with a triple to right field off the wall. Hannah Howell followed with a sacrifice fly to left field bringing in Spearman for the 3-2 lead late in the game.

Southeastern was ready to respond as a lead off single followed by two more batters reaching bases loaded with nobody out. Taylor followed with an RBI single to tie the game at 3-3. After a strikeout for the first out Garrison followed with a 2-RBI double down the left field line scoring Fryrear and Harlow for a 5-3 lead over the Rangers.

The Rangers got the inning started with a walk and a single to have first and second nobody out. Ashley Low later hit an RBI single to left field as Rivera came around to score. Southeastern threw a runner out a third on the play for the second out as the Ranger cut the deficit to 5-4.

The Savage Storm held on to the 5-4 win over the Rangers to complete the series sweep over the Rangers. Northwestern will be back in action on Tuesday afternoon against Newman University with a doubleheader.
