WICHITA, KANSAS - Northwestern Oklahoma State played Newman University in a mid week non conference game Tuesday afternoon. The Newman Jets came back for the 7-6 victory over the Rangers after a two run ninth inning, after the Rangers were leading for eight innings.
The loss drops the Rangers to 13-7 on the season with a 5-4 conference record.Â
Carson Wright got the offense going early in the game with a first inning run on a solo home run to right field for the 1-0 lead. Colby Mitchell threw a scoreless first inning as Newman stayed scoreless through the first four innings. After a two out double a strikeout ended the inning.
Colby Grace led off the second with a double to right field before he came around to score on a Chase Gordon RBI single. In the third inning the Rangers continued to extend the lead as Chad Green came around to score on an RBI ground out after stealing second and advancing on a single.Â
The Rangers extended the lead after a walk and a single set the Rangers with runners in scoring position before Colby Grace drove in Wright on a sacrifice fly for a 4-0 lead.Â
Newman's offense struck in the fifth inning after a hit batter and a wild pitch led to an RBI single making it a 4-1 game in favor of the Rangers.
After a scoreless top of the sixth inning after a lead off double by Trevor Saire did not come around to score, the Jets chipped into the Ranger lead. Wohl came around to score after reaching on a single and a stolen base led to an RBI single by Arnold, as the Rangers led 4-2.Â
The 7th inning the Rangers took advantage of two straight walks that were followed by a 2-RBI double by Hagen Barcello for a 6-2 Ranger lead as Colby Grace and Paul Sachen scored on the hit.Â
Newman did not go away though as two singles set up first and second two outs before an RBI single by Wohl pushed the Jets deficit to 6-3. The Jets continued their climb back as after a single and a hit batter led to an RBI single from Smith before the 5th run scored on an error before Jacob Wiltshire threw out the tying run at the plate.Â
The Jets in the ninth put their first two base runners on before a sacrifice bunt and intentional walk loaded the bases. This led to a 2-RBI single to right field scoring runs 6 and 7 as Newman came back in the ninth to steal the home victory over the Rangers.Â
Northwestern will return to conference play over the weekend against Southern Nazarene on Friday and Saturday. There will be a single game Friday at 6:00 PM with a doubleheader to follow on Saturday starting at 1:00 PM.
