WINONA, Minn. – Northwestern Oklahoma State women's basketball team faced Winona State University on their second day of the GAC-NCIS Conference Challenge. Northwestern held on through a tight fourth quarter to edge Winona State by one point this Saturday evening 53-52.
The Lady Rangers struck first with
Jaida Shipp's layup and two three pointers from
Catyn Graham.
Summya Adigun also added another three pointer, while
Conley Cayot supplied production inside as the Rangers stretched their advantage. Winona State battled back late. The Warriors scored off the wing and on a drive, and added a steal and a floater to keep them within striking distance. Winona State finished the first quarter with a layup with four seconds left to cut the margin to three points 15-18.
Northwestern took a 29–26 lead into halftime after the Rangers controlled much of the second quarter with strong rebounding and timely scoring. Shipp jump-started the offense with a layup, and Adigun added a pull-up jumper and a pair of free throws as Northwestern built separation. The Rangers dominated the boards, with
Kira Bass and Shipp creating second-chance looks, to keep the momentum on their side.
The Lady Rangers held onto a one-point lead after a tight third quarter, powered by strong interior play and rebounding. Shipp opened the period with a layup and continued to score inside, while Bass added another basket to keep the Rangers in control early. Adigun provided a spark with a steal and an and-one driving finish as Northwestern answered each Winona State push. Though the Warriors hit a few key threes, the Rangers' steady scoring inside allowed them to stay in front, taking a slim edge into the fourth 43-42.
Northwestern opened the fourth quarter still clinging to a one-point lead and relied on tough defense and steady rebounding to stay in front. The Rangers attacked the lane for key baskets and added important points at the free-throw line to keep control as the quarter tightened. Winona State answered with a few outside looks and free throws, briefly pulling even, but Northwestern responded by getting stops and scoring inside down the stretch. Despite a handful of late turnovers, the Rangers held firm on the final defensive possession and secured a one-point victory to close out the night 53-52.
Shipp led The Lady Rangers with 17 points and eight rebounds, while Adigun added 16 points and four rebounds. Graham ended the game with 9 points and six rebounds. Bass led the team in rebounds and assists with 10 and four. Cayot added seven points, four rebounds and two steals. The Lady Rangers are now 2-0 overall.
The Rangers first home game will be Nov. 22, next Thursday as they face the No. 7 Pittsburg State University Gorillas at 5:30 p.m.
