Northwestern Basketball Closes Out Victory Over Arkansas-Monticello

MONTICELLO, ARKANSAS - Northwestern Oklahoma State Men's basketball closed out the trip to Arkansas with a 73-69 victory over the Weevils Sunday afternoon. The Rangers used a 16-5 run to start the second half to take a 15-point lead before closing out the 73-69 victory.

Northwestern improves to 13-13 on the season with a 10-10 Great American Conference record while Arkansas Monticello drops to 4-22 with a 1-19 GAC record. 

Camron McDowell led the way for the Rangers with 35 points and seven assists, both team highs. DaRaun Clark led the team with seven rebounds while adding two steals a block and nine points. Max Alexander finished with 18 points in the game. 

 Arkansas Monticello opened the scoring with a shot in the paint for the early lead before McDowell answered back with a layup of his own. The Rangers took their first lead on a steal and fast break points from McDowell as an 11-0 run put the Rangers in front 15-6 over the Weevils. On that run, McDowell had nine of the points. 

A Kenyon Holcombe three-pointer at the 11:32 mark put the Rangers in front by double digits for the first time of the afternoon. Max Alexander helped continue the run scoring on the break as the run overall reached 16-2. Arkansas Monticello went on a 6-0 run to get back within seven points but McDowell continued to control the opening half with seven straight of the Rangers' next points as the Rangers continued to hold an eight-point lead at 25-17.

Arkansas Monticello before the half tried to steal the lead going on a 9-2 run and getting within one point after a Sissoko three-pointer cut the Ranger lead to 27-26 with 3:39 left in the opening half. The Rangers answered with a 7-0 run to build the lead back to eight after a shot from Logan Phillips. A last-second jump shot by Arkansas Monticello's Jacobs sent the Rangers into the halftime break with a 34-28 lead. 

McDowell opened the scoring in the second half with a layup off a Holcombe rebound. Alexander helped get the Rangers back to a double-digit lead after the Rangers forced two turnovers and a missed three-pointer leading to a fastbreak. Alexander made the shot while drawing the foul before finishing off the three-point play, as the Rangers led 42-32.

With 13:01 left to play in the game DaRaun Clark hit his first three-pointer of the afternoon to send the Rangers up by 15 points at 50-35 over the Weevils. Out of the timeout Arkansas Monticello went on an 8-0 run to cut the Ranger lead down to seven at 50-43. A forced turnover led Alexander to put the lead back to double digits at 55-45. Arkansas Monticello was able to cut the Ranger lead down to two at 60-58 following a 13-2 run. 

The closest Arkansas Monticello was able to get the Ranger lead down to was one at 65-64 but the Rangers never let the Weevils tie the game. Started with an Alexander three-pointer to put the lead back to four. This was followed by a DaRaun Clark three-pointer as the Rangers pushed the lead to 71-66 before closing the 73-69 victory over Arkansas Monticello.

Northwestern closes out the regular season with two games one on the road at Southern Nazarene Thursday before the final home game on senior day Saturday afternoon against Southeastern.
