Lady Rangers Opening Run Leads to Dominating Victory Thursday

ALVA, OKLAHOMA - Northwestern Oklahoma State Women's Basketball returned home with a dominating win over Henderson State Reddies Thursday evening. The Lady Rangers opened the game on a 12-0 run never trailing in the game before closing out the 81-45 victory over the Reddies.

Northwestern improves to 11-10 on the season with an 8-7 GAC record while Henderson State falls to 9-12 on the season with a 7-8 conference record. 

The Lady Rangers were led by Payton Jones and Camille Thomas, two of three players in double figures. Jones finished with 22 followed by Thomas with 21 for her new season high. Jaida Shipp was the third player in double figures with 12. Carly Craig finished with eight assists in the game. Kira Bass led the team with eight rebounds. Northwestern had five different players with two steals.

Northwestern jumped out to an early 12-0 lead as Camille Thomas opened the game with eight of the game's first 12 points for the game. The Lady Rangers held the Reddies 0-6 from the floor while forcing Henderson State to three turnovers. Tegan Jones picked up a steal leading to a fast break for Kira Bass and the 12-point lead. Natalie Cardenas put the first points on the board for Henderson State halfway through the opening quarter. Northwestern continued to answer back each time Henderson State got back within 10, this time it was Lily Mahy hitting a three-pointer assisted by Isabella Pehrson. Camille Thomas closed the quarter with a shot for her 10th point of the quarter for the 23-9 first-quarter lead. 

The first points for the Lady Rangers in the second quarter came from Camille Thomas' three-pointer for the 15-point lead, the largest to that point in the game. Payton Jones scored five straight points for Northwestern keeping the large lead. Isabella Pehrson extended the Lady Ranger lead to 20 for the first time of the evening at 36-16. Payton Jones continued her strong second quarter scoring the next six points for the Lady Rangers continuing to build a larger lead. Jones had 11 points in the second quarter and helped push the Lady Rangers into halftime with a 44-22 lead over the Reddies. Northwestern forced 17 first-half turnovers building the big halftime lead.

Jaida Shipp got the scoring started in the second half with her sixth point of the game assisted by Craig. Craig and Tegan Jones hit back-to-back three-pointers pushing the lead back to 25 points. Payton Jones hit a shot to put the Rangers up by 30 points, the largest lead of the game to that point in the game. Northwestern led 69-38 through three-quarters of play after Jaida Shipp finished the quarter with a couple of free throws. 

In the fourth quarter, the Lady Rangers continued to roll as Payton Jones scored the opening points for her 22nd point of the game. Northwestern continued to extend the lead as Jamesha Reece picked up a steal on the defensive end leading the break to a layup for her first points and the 40-point lead for the Lady Rangers. Northwestern went on a 10-0 run in the fourth quarter finished off by Ella Porter's layup and her first points of the game as the Lady Rangers' largest lead of the game was 41 at 79-38. Northwestern held Henderson State scoreless in the first eight minutes of the quarter. The Lady Rangers closed out the 81-45 victory over Henderson State.

Northwestern is home Saturday afternoon for the Hall of Fame game against Ouachita Baptist Tigers. The tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 PM against the Tigers.
