HAYS, KANSAS - Northwestern Oklahoma State Softball traveled to Hays for a doubleheader against Fort Hays State on Tuesday afternoon. Fort Hays took both games over the Rangers after scoring two runs in the third for the 2-1 win before getting to a fast start scoring in the first and closing out a 4-2 win over the Rangers.
The Rangers drop to 6-18 overall on the season, as Fort Hays State improves to 18-6 on the year.
GAME ONE:
In the first game of the day Chloe Brown pitched a complete game with six innings while striking out five. Madeline Pack had the Rangers hit in the game while Jadyn Muns came around to score the run.
Rachel Sherwood had a first inning walk but the Rangers were not able to score. The Tigers had a lead off single but Brown worked around the hit to keep the game at 0-0.
The Tigers had their first scoring chance in the second inning when a lead off walk followed by a single and a walk loaded the bases. Brown pitched to a ground out to keep the game tied.
It was the third inning when the Tigers struck first after a single and a wild pitch put Duarte to second which led to an RBI single by Curry. Mohr followed with an RBI double to take a 2-0 lead.
The Rangers were able to get half the runs back in the fourth inning after Muns reached on a Tiger error, this led to a wild pitch scoring Muns as the Rangers trailed 2-1.
In the fifth inning the Rangers had a lead off double by Pack to left center looking to tie the game, however a pop up, and two ground outs helped the Tigers hold the 2-1 lead over the Rangers.
The Tigers closed out the 2-1 victory over the Rangers after a perfect seventh inning and taking game one of the afternoon.
GAME TWO:
The Rangers led in hits by Rachel Sherwood with two on the afternoon along with a 2-RBI game. Kathryn Jones threw 6.0 innings,striking out one.
Rachel Sherwood picked up a first inning single but the Rangers were not able to score after a strikeout and ground out ended the inning. Fort Hays State started strong with back to back extra base hits after a lead off double led to an RBI triple for the early 1-0 lead. Pierce followed with an RBI ground out for the 2-0 lead over the Rangers.
Northwestern went in order before the Tigers had a lead off single come around to score on a sacrifice fly to left field for the 3-0 lead over the Rangers.
The Rangers left two singles on one in the third and one in the fourth before scoring in the sixth inning to cut the deficit to one run. It started with a Chloe Prentiss lead off single before a Rachel Shwerwood 2-run home run as the Rangers trailed 3-2.
Fort Hays State answered though with a run in the sixth inning after a one out single by Curry led to an RBI double by Mohr to extend the home team's lead 4-2 in the sixth.
The Rangers in the seventh inning had a single by Jadyn Muns but a fly out and pop out closed the win for the Tigers over the Rangers in a doubleheader sweep.
Northwestern is home on Friday afternoon for a doubleheader against Arkansas Monticello with first pitch scheduled for 2:00 PM before closing the series at noon on Saturday.
