Ranger Baseball Splits Doubleheader to Win Weekend Series With Southeastern

ALVA, OKLAHOMA - Northwestern Oklahoma State baseball closed out its weekend series with Southeastern Oklahoma State on a Saturday afternoon doubleheader. Southeastern took game one after extending their lead later in the game. The Rangers won game two behind scoring in three straight innings to win the series.

Northwestern improves to 13-10 on the season with a 5-7 conference record.

GAME ONE:

In the opening game of the afternoon, the Rangers were led in hits by four different players with one each. Dylan Bradford drove in the Ranger run.

The first game was a pitcher's duel. After both teams had runners on base, the Rangers worked around two Savage Storm base runners, ending the inning with a ground out. Bradford led the inning off with a single, and Connor Green was hit by a pitch before a pop-up closed the inning, still tied 0-0.

Southeastern struck first in the second inning after a walk and a single put two runners on base. The first run was scored on a wild pitch before a Thorp single put the Savage Storm in front 2-0. After the Rangers had two base runners, a double play ended the inning with the Savage Storm in front 2-0.

The Savage Storm, looking to extend the lead, loaded the bases before a fly out kept the game at 2-0. The game stayed 2-0 into the sixth inning after the Savage Storm loaded the bases at the top of the inning. A strikeout closed the top of the inning to end the top half.

Northwestern got their first run in the sixth inning as Harley Shaffer hit a triple to lead off the inning before a Bradford ground out drove Shaffer in as the Rangers were down one at 2-1.

Southeastern stranded two more runners in scoring position as the Rangers kept the game 2-1, but it was the ninth inning when Southeastern extended their lead on a Mueller 2-run home run to take a 4-1 lead. Southeastern got one more on an RBI single by Keeton for the 5-1 lead over Northwestern.

Savage Storm closed out the 5-1 win to even the weekend series at 1-1 heading to game three of the series.

GAME TWO:

The Rangers were led in game two by Connor Green in hits, finishing with a team high three and driving in one run. Gavin Mendoza and Carson Wright each had two hits, as Mendoza led the team with a 2-RBI game.

Jacob Wiltshire pitched a complete game, throwing seven innings, allowing one run, and striking out nine.

Both teams went down in order in the first inning, and the game stayed 0-0 into the third inning. Southeastern struck first in this game with a solo home run by Keeton for the 1-0 lead.

Rangers looking to tie the game had a one-out single by Chase Gordon, followed by a single by Carson Wright. Southeastern was able to escape the jam and keep the score at 1-0.

The fourth inning was when the Rangers struck for the team's first run as Gavin Mendoza blasted a solo home run to tie the game at 1-1. The Rangers were not done, as Connor Green doubled to right center field before Colby Grace hit him in with a sacrifice fly to center field for the RBI and the 2-1 lead after four innings.

Northwestern scored in the second straight inning as in the fifth with Gordon on third base Bradford hit an RBI ground out for the 3-1 lead. Mendoza, later in the inning, hit an RBI double for the 4-1 lead. Connor Green followed with an RBI single taking a 5-1 lead over the Savage Storm.

In the sixth inning, Jacob Wiltshire struck out the side in order, keeping the game at 5-1. The Rangers' final at bat scored two more runs, making it three straight innings scoring a run. A walk and a stolen base by Colby Grace led to a Bradford RBI single, scoring Grace for the 6-1 lead. Carson Wright grounded out, driving in Gordon for the 7-1 lead.

In the final inning, the Savage Storm were able to draw a walk but Wiltshire struck out his final batter of the game to end the inning for the 7-1 win and series victory over Southeastern.
