DURANT, OKLAHOMA - Northwestern Oklahoma State Softball closed out the three game series with Southeastern Oklahoma State Sunday afternoon. The Savage Storm scored early taking a 2-0 lead before closing out the 5-3 victory as the Rangers comeback fell short.
The Rangers fall to 4-13 on the season with a 1-8 conference record.
Kaitlyn Corn and Rachel Sherwood led the team with two hits each, along with one RBI on the day. Devynn Raile, Avery Clark, and Jadyn Muns all scored the Rangers runs. Madelyn Cason threw three 3 ? innings, allowing one run in the game.
Rangers looking to strike first in the Sunday game loaded the bases in the top of the first inning, but a fly out to center field helped the Savage Storm escape the jam with no damage done. The Savage Storm struck first with a solo home run to right field for the 1-0 lead. After back-to-back singles, they scored a second run on an RBI groundout for the 2-0 lead after the first inning.
After both teams went down in order in the second inning, Southeastern was able to extend their lead in the third inning as two walks led to an RBI single by Olivares to center field, scoring a run for the 3-0 lead. Two hitters later, Southeastern pushed their lead to 4-0 on their third RBI single of the game.
In the Rangers' half of the fourth inning, Northwestern was able to get on the board after a leadoff double by Kaitlyn Corn led to an RBI single by Rachel Sherwood, scoring pinch runner Raile as the Rangers trailed 4-1.
Northwestern continued to climb back in the game as in the fifth inning Northwestern got a single by Jadyn Muns followed by a Avery Clark walk. Corn singled in Muns pick-up up the RBI cutting the deficit to 4-2. Clark then scored on a passed ball as Northwestern was down by one run at 4-3.
Southeastern extended their lead by a run in the bottom of the sixth inning after an error by the Rangers allowed the leadoff runner on base, who came around to score on an RBI double by Simmons for the 5-3 lead for the home team.
The seventh inning the Rangers looked to come back and tie the game after a single by Clark followed by a walk to Corn put the tying run on base. Sherwood singled back up the middle but a play at the plate ended the game as Southeastern threw out the run at the plate to close out the 5-3 victory over the Rangers completing the series sweep.
Northwestern is on the road Tuesday, March 11th in Weatherford, Oklahoma for a doubleheader against Southwestern Oklahoma State.
