ARKADELPHIA, ARKANSAS - Northwestern Oklahoma State baseball opened the three-game series with Ouachita Baptist with a single game Thursday afternoon. The Rangers took an early lead before the Tigers scored in three straight innings, helping push the Tigers in front for the 4-3 series opening win.
The Rangers drop to 27-17 on the season with a 14-14 conference record, while the Tigers improve to 19-22 and a 16-12 conference mark.
Carson Wright and Hagen Barcello each had two hits on the afternoon for the team high. Barcello, Colby Grace, and Chase Gordon each had an RBI.
Logan Sandoval allowed two runs in 5.2 innings of work, striking out two. Dawson Toborg struck out two in two innings of work.
Each team had a hit in the first inning but were unable to score before the Rangers struck first in the second inning. Barcello singled later, advancing to second before an RBI single by Chase Gordon pushed across the game's first run for the 1-0 Ranger lead.
Sandovall retired the Tigers in order in the second inning, keeping the Rangers out in front.
The Rangers held the lead into the fifth inning when the Tigers loaded the bases after a double and a walk led to a sacrifice fly scoring Bowman to tie the game at one. A ground out kept the game tied.
Ouachita Baptist, though, took the lead in the sixth inning after a single and stolen base led to an RBI double for the Tigers' first lead of the game at 2-1.
The Tigers extended the lead in the seventh inning after loading the bases a sacrifice bunt led to two runs scoring on the play and a 4-1 home team lead.
The game stayed 4-1 into the ninth inning when the Rangers' comeback bid fell short. A leadoff double followed by two walks loaded the bases with one out. An RBI single by Barcello moved everyone a base, scoring Wright as the Rangers trailed 4-2. A Gordon fielder's choice pushed across a second run in the inning for the 4-3 game.
With two outs and the Rangers down a run, the Tigers picked up a strikeout to complete the win over the Rangers 4-3 to open the series.
Northwestern closes out the three-game set with a doubleheader against the Tigers on Friday, with the first pitch scheduled for noon.
