ALVA, Okla. – The Northwestern Oklahoma State baseball team fell to Newman, 8-5, on Tuesday afternoon.
The Rangers offense struck first in the bottom of the second, when
Matthew Bailey hit a double to left field to send
Jason McCarty home to give the Rangers the early lead. Bailey then advanced to third on a wild pitch, and
Joel Lindahl singled to extend the lead to 2-0 going to the third inning. The Rangers tacked on two more runs with back-to-back sacrifice flies from
Amari Goodfellow and
Tyler Hogan to go up 4-0 at the end of the third inning.
Newman responded with runs in the top of the fourth and fifth innings to cut their deficit to two, but Northwestern answered with a single from
Cole Barton, a walk from
Alex Dabrowski, and
Amari Goodfellow reached on a fielder's choice to put Northwestern up 5-2 after the fifth inning. The Jets got a run back with a run in the top of the sixth on a bases loaded walk, and scored two more runs in the top of the seventh to tie the game at 5-5. The Rangers got runners in scoring position in the bottom of the eighth, but could not capitalize and kept the game tied.
In the bottom of the ninth, the Rangers once again got a runner in scoring position off a walk from
Levi Joyce and a grounder from Barton that moved pinch runner
Brandon Jennings to second base.
Amari Goodfellow singled to center field, but Jennings was thrown out at home for the third out of the inning. The Jets scored three runs in the 10th inning to take an 8-5 lead, and held on to beat the Rangers, 8-5.
Mattern, Hogan, Barton, and
Jailon Goodfellow led the Rangers in hits with two each, while
Amari Goodfellow led in RBI with two.
Elias Herrera led the Rangers in strikeouts with six.
The Rangers will be back in action for a four-game series against New Mexico Highlands University, with the first game of the series on Friday at 2 p.m. at Myers Stadium.
