Rangers Shut Down Crimson Storm in Series Opener

ALVA, Okla. – The Northwestern Oklahoma State baseball team defeated Southern Nazarene, 5-2, on Friday.

Southern Nazarene opened up the game with a run in the top of the first to take the lead, 1-0, and the Rangers got a runner in scoring position in the bottom of the third with Matthew Bailey getting hit by a pitch and moving to second on a groundout. The Rangers took the lead in the fifth with Joel Lindahl singling up the middle and stealing second before Jailon Goodfellow hit a towering shot to left field to give Northwestern the 2-1 advantage.

The Rangers threatened again in the sixth, as Alex Dabrowski roped a double to left field and Blake Mattern singled to the pitcher to put runners at the corners. Gordon brought another run in on a sacrifice fly to center field to expand the Ranger lead to 3-1, and the Ranger bats stayed hot in the seventh as Jason McCarty ripped a single to right field and Lindahl doubling to left center to move the lead to 4-1. Bailey got on base with a walk, and Goodfellow sliced a single through the left side to bring Lindahl home. Southern Nazarene tacked on a run in the ninth, but Ryan McClaskey shut down the Crimson Storm to win, 5-2.

Lindahl and Goodfellow led the Rangers in hits with two, while Goodfellow led in RBI with three.

The Rangers will be back in action tomorrow, as they wrap up the series against the Crimson Storm with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. at Myers Stadium.
