Football gameday has been a part of the Northwestern Oklahoma State University tradition since 1898 and has been a steady source of pride for the entire Alva community. Ranger teams have posted 11 conference titles and 13 postseason appearances, resulting in three trips to the National Title Game and one National Championship.

In July of 2013, the NCAA promoted Northwestern to Year Two Candidacy - the second in a three-step transition process from the school's long time home in the NAIA to NCAA Division II. Northwestern is targeting full membership in time for the 2015 football season.

The transition began in the summer of 2012 with Northwestern's formal acceptance into the membership cycle. Invitation in hand, the school severed ties with the Sooner Athletic Conference and the Central States Football League to join the Great American Conference as a provisional member.

The 11-team conference features a balance of six Arkansas and five Oklahoma schools. The move to the GAC rekindles decades old rivalries from the old Oklahoma Intercollegiate Conference. Northwestern, East Central, Southeastern Oklahoma State and Southwestern Oklahoma State were all members up until the league split following the 1996 season.

When the latter three schools - along with Northeastern State - bolted for the NCAA in the mid-90s, Northwestern chose to remain with the NAIA and was rewarded with a long stretch of gridiron success. In the 11-year period between 1995 and 2005, the Rangers produced 40 NAIA All-Americans.

The 1999 Rangers finished 13-0 and captured the National Title. The 2000 group - led by three-time All-American Lynn Scott - went unbeaten before falling in the National Finals. Scott went on to play five seasons for the Dallas Cowboys.

Another future NFL standout played on that 2000 squad as a freshman. Patrick Crayton - later a Cowboy and San Diego Chargers - starred for four seasons. He helped lead the 2003 team back to the National Finals and was recently inducted into the Ranger Hall of Fame.

Between 1996 and 2010, Northwestern compiled a 120-47 record (.719), winning eight conference titles. From 1999 to 2011 the Rangers posted an incredible 216 All-Conference selections as a member of the Central States Football League with nine trips to the NAIA Playoffs.
