Rangers Derailed by Second-Half Turnovers

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. -- Tanner Marsh accounted for four touchdowns and 357 yards of total offense as Arkansas Tech (2-3) upended Northwestern Oklahoma State (0-5) 41-20.

The first half was an offensive showcase, as both teams combined for 609 yards of total offense to go with four lead changes.

It didn't take long for points to light up the scoreboard.

Arkansas Tech scored on the third play of the game when Cody Lewis scooted for a 48-yard score. On Tech's next possession Todd Pinkston connected on a 25-yard field goal to extend the lead to 10-0.On the next possession Northwestern responded with a nine-play, 74-yard drive that was capped off by a Kyle Jech 6-yard touchdown run, but the two-point conversion was unsuccessful.

The Rangers trailed 10-6 after the first quarter.

Two minutes into the second quarter the Northwestern defense came up with a huge stop when Josh Robinson forced and recovered a fumble at the 50-yard line.Three plays later Northwestern took a 13-10 lead when Javari Liggins rushed for a 24-yard score.

Tech reclaimed the lead two minutes later on a five-play, 37-yard drive, which finished with a one-yard Marsh plunge to make it 17-13.

However, Northwestern countered.

Moments later Jech connected with Andrew King on a 30-yard screen pass and the Rangers took a 20-17 lead.

Tech moved back in front on the following possession when Marsh hit Cassius Washington on a 52-yard touchdown pitch-and-catch to make it 24-20.

With less than a minute remaining in the second quarter, Tech forced Northwestern to punt and capitalized on one last opportunity before halftime. Facing a third and 17 at Northwestern's 47-yard line, Marsh found John Simpson who slipped behind the Rangers' secondary for a 47-yard score.

Tech lead 31-20 at halftime. 

Northwestern turned the ball over on their first and second possessions of the second half.

The Rangers started the third quarter on their 13-yard line and drove down to the Tech 11-yard line, but Jared Jackson fumbled to end the drive. On Northwestern's next drive Jech threw an interception on Tech's two-yard line.

Tech continued to stifle Northwestern's offense, and added two fourth-quarter touchdowns to cushion their lead.

Jech finished the night with 31 completions on 51 attempts for 354 yards with one touchdown through the air and one on the ground. King had a game-high 115 yards receiving and one score.

Northwestern travels to East Central next Saturday for a 4 p.m. kickoff.
