HAYS, Kan. - The Rangers traveled to Fort Hays Kansas for a non-conference bout with the Tigers of Fort Hays State looking to get back into the win column, but came away with the loss, 5-0.
Â
The Rangers could not get the bats going much in this one only accumulating four hits.
Greg Carrington led all hitters with two hits followed by
Nathan Kane and
Jorin Van Amstel who each had one hit.
Starter,Â
Thomas Sander went 5.2 innings facing 23 batters. Sander allowed two runs on five hits with two walks and one strike out. His day would end after loading the bases in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Â
Northwestern found themselves down early in this one as Fort Hays took a one nothing lead in the third inning, and it continued from there as the Rangers were unable to plate any runners.
Baron Phillips came on in relief of Sander in the bottom of the seventh and was able to get the Rangers out of the inning.
Collin Fouts was next up for the Black-and-Red on the hill where he came on in the bottom of the seventh. Fouts threw one inning of work facing five batters allowing one run on two hits.
Tyler Havener relieved Fouts in the bottom of eight where he faced just one batter, surrendering a run on a walk.
Pat Delano  finished off the eighth for the visitors where he faced five batters, giving up just a single hit, scoring a run in the process, making it a commanding 5-0 lead, which is where it would remain.
Fort Hays State had five runs on only seven hits. Two big hits with runners in scoring position in a triple by Nick Hammeke in the third that started the scoring for the Tigers and a single by Jared Bogosian would prove to be the difference.
The Tigers would only need one pitcher for this one as Sam Capps would hold the Rangers to no runs and just four hits on the day.
