Bethany, Okla.- Northwestern Oklahoma State continued conference play Thursday evening in Bethany Oklahoma earning a well deserved win against Southern Nazarene 3-0.
"Obviously it was a total team effort tonight very pleased to walk away with 3 points on the road," head coach Erik Solberg stated. Those who are not involved in college athletics don't understand how hard it is to go on the road and win. Very pleased with being able to accomplish that tonight. "Â
The Ranger attack wasted no time, four minutes into the game Alissa Carlson had two quick shots. After the first one was saved, Carlson found the back of the net with the second giving NWOSU an early 1-0 lead.
"First goal was important, we talked and emphasized the need to get the first goal." Solberg stated. "We have allowed the first goal every game so far in conference play until tonight. Getting the goal early took a lot of the pressure off us tonight.".
The early goal set the tone, and the Rangers took full advantage of it making sure to control the game the rest of the way. After maintaining possession for most of the first half the attack would strike again.Â
Kaley Whitworth would find the back of the net in the 37th minute of the first half to give the Rangers a 2-0 lead.Â
The halftime score would read 2-0. Rangers controlled the half, finishing with 11 shots with 8 being on goal.
The second half was no different. Northwestern jumped out of the half early with a goal from Brittany Cirnigliaro in the 51:33 mark. This gave the Rangers a commanding 3-0 lead and that would never change.Â
Rangers would out shoot SNU 13-7 on goal and 19-10 for the game. NWOSU had three assists on three goals.Â
Reyna Gonzalez completed the shutout Thursday night stopping all seven shots she faced in the game.Â
NWOSU continued to have a balanced attack with three different scorers led by Carlson who had a goal and an assist. Cirnigliaro and Whitworth followed with the other two goals. The assists were from Hollie Pankake, Makayla Barrientos, and Alissa Carlson.Â
"This was a full game from top to bottom. It helps when you score 3 goals but to not concede any is a nice accomplishment as well. Defense played well tonight, were able to take the pressure off their attack."
Northwestern Oklahoma State will return to action Saturday October 19th against Oklahoma Baptist University. NWOSU record now improves to 4-6-1 and accomplish their first conference victory on the season improving to 1-3-1 in that category.
