Rangers stumble on the road

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – The Northwestern Oklahoma State University defense gave the Rangers opportunities on Saturday afternoon at Arkansas Tech, but turnovers proved costly as the Wonder Boys came out on the high side of the score, 21-14.

Northwestern's record dropped to 2-5 on the season, while the Arkansas Tech improved to 1-6. The Rangers will be back in action next Saturday at Ranger Field for Homecoming, as they host Harding at 4 p.m.

Arkansas Tech was able to capitalize on the Rangers two turnovers in the fourth quarter. The Wonder Boys scored on a 55-yard fumble recovery and then put together a six play 44-yard drive after an interception.

The Northwestern defense was led by James Ellis, who collected 10 tackles, seven solo and a sack, who Qua'Shawn Gray had seven tackles, three solo. Cam White forced the ATU lone turnover and Christopher Fuzeme recovered the fumble.

The Wonder Boys got on the board first in the first quarter when they took a 12 play 80-yard possession down the field and punched it in to take a 7-0 lead with 6:25 to go.

In the second quarter, the Rangers would turn an Arkansas Tech fumble into a 14 play, 86-yard drive that was capped off by an 18-yard touchdown completion from Trent Easley to Torrence Stevens.

The score remained the same until the second half when the Wonder Boys added two touchdowns 21-7 in the fourth quarter.

The Rangers answered with a three play drive in less than a minute of action, capped by an Easley to Kentrez Bell 25-yard connection for a touchdown.

Gavin Garner finished the game with 141 yards on nine catches and Easley completed 23 passes for 314 yards. Stevens and Bell each recorded 60+ yards through the air, Stevens caught seven passes for 64 yards and Bell had 60 yards on three receptions.

Jacob Peyton led the Black-and-Red on the ground with 35 yards on 10 attempts, while Stevens had 16 yards on four chances, Calion Baker also had 16 yard on seven runs.
