Rangers Earn Big Overtime Win to Start the New Year

MAGNOLIA, Ark.– Northwestern Oklahoma State University Rangers started the new year with a big win as they took Southern Arkansas University to overtime and snatched the game with a score of 88-84. The Black-and-Red went into halftime trailing by one and fell almost ten points behind in the second but were able to rally back to send the game into overtime.

The Black-and-Red seemed as if they couldn't miss in overtime and were able to stay one step ahead of the Muleriders to take their first Great American Conference win. Northwestern's offense was led by Parrish Hewitt who earned 25 points, a team-leading nine rebounds, and went 5-6 from the free throw line, nailing two to secure the win.

Other Rangers that had a huge impact on the game included Nathan Bailey who had 17 points with 10 in overtime alone. He went 3-for-5 from beyond the arc with seven rebounds. Jack Peck followed with 11 points as he went 5-of-9 from the field.

The entire game was a good match-up as both teams came into the game with similar stats in points per game, assists and turnovers. There were 11 different score changes throughout the game. The Muleriders started the game with the momentum, with the Rangers just on their tail.

The Ranger tie the score for the first time at the 10-minute mark and then again at the eight-minute mark. Finally, with five minutes left in the first half a lay-up from Jaedon Whitfield gave the Black-and-Red their first lead, 23-22.

Northwestern pulled to as much as an eight-point lead before the Muleriders came storming back. Southern Arkansas answered with a nine-point run of their own to take the lead right before the half with a score of 34-35.

The second half was similar to the first with both teams battling until the very end as they went shot for shot through the first couple minutes of the half. It wasn't until the 11-minute mark where Southern Arkansas began to pull away. The Muleriders were able to take a 10-point lead and held it until the three-minute mark. Northwestern went on an 11-0 run to take the lead 71-69 with 12 seconds left, but two free throws from SAU tied the game 71-71 and sent the game into overtime.

The Rangers rode their momentum into overtime and did not miss a shot from the field as they went 6-6 from the field and 2-2 from deep. Bailey really caught fire and earned 10 points in overtime alone. The game was tight until the end with both teams depending on free throws to keep them in or out of the game. Two final free throws from Hewitt gave the NWOSU their first GAC win with a score of 88-84.

Northwestern went 17-26 from the free-throw line, as they shot 65% throughout the whole game. The Muleriders struggled from the line as they only went 21-45, for 47%. However, Southern Arkansas had 21 second chance points and a whopping 30 points off of turnovers compared to NWOSU's eight second chance points and 11 points off turnovers. However, the team's 11 assists and good focus from the free throw line kept the Black-and-Red in the game.

The Rangers will continue their trip in Arkansas with another GAC opponent in the University of Arkansas at Monticello. Tip-off is at 3:00 p.m. following the Lady Rangers game in Monticello, Ark. Saturday afternoon.
