ALVA, Okla- The Rangers were ready to carry momentum in from Sunday afternoon's win over Washburn. The Red-and-Black were set for a Tuesday afternoon non-conference matchup against the Northeastern RiverHawks. Northeastern won Tuesday afternoon's game 5-1.
The Red-and-Black were held to three hits on Tuesday. Jake Darrow, Colton Whitehouse, and Brock Randels. The RBI for the Rangers came from outfielder Whitehouse as he hit a solo homerun in the bottom half of the 5th inning.
Freshman, Kyle Moran got his first start with Northwestern Tuesday afternoon. He pitched four innings giving up four runs on seven hits while striking out two batters. He was relieved by Emilio Lovato who pitched four scoreless innings, with striking out one batter. Koby Hudson pitched a scoreless ninth inning.
The game Tuesday afternoon was a pitcher's duel. As Moran pitched two straight scoreless innings before allowing a run in the third inning. The RiverHawks were able to capitalize with runners on with an RBI single in the inning from Chaz Orr.
After a scoreless fourth inning frame by both starting pitchers Moran of Northwestern and Jones for Northeastern, the RiverHawks caused some damage in the fifth. With the Rangers trailing 1-0 the RiverHawks loaded the bases in their half of the fifth.
With the bases loaded Northeastern hit a 2 RBI single, again from Orr for his second of the game to extend the RiverHawk lead to 4-0. Nic Swanson of Northeastern followd with an RBI single to extend their lead to 5-0.
As the Rangers looked to start their comeback as red-shirt senior Whitehouse stepped to the plate. Whitehouse would deliver hitting a solo homerun to right field to bring the deficit to four at a 5-1 ball game.
Whitehouse's homerun would be the last run of the game as the pitcher's duel took over the final four innings of the game. John Rains closed the game out with a scoreless inning as he retired the side in order.
The Rangers will open conference play with a home series this upcoming weekend against Southern Nazarene at Glass Family Field at Myers Stadium. Friday's first pitch is scheduled for 3:00PM on February 14th. Saturday is a doubleheader with the first game scheduled to start at 1:00PM, with the second game shortly after the first game.
