Northwestern Dropped Two in Final Day of Invitational

WICHITA FALLS, Texas– Northwestern Oklahoma State Rangers continued to play in Wichita Falls, Texas for their final day at the MSU Texas Invitational. The Rangers started their day against the University of Nebraska at Kearney and then finished off the weekend with a match-up against Regis University. Ariel Forsyth was the starting pitcher for their first game against the Lopers. Kameron Ryer was the starter against Cameron University.

The Rangers tallied an outstanding nineteen hits through both games with seven in the first against Nebraska-Kearney and twelve coming in the second game against Regis University. Sophomore Abby Detar led the Red-and-Black offense as she went 4-for-6 with two runs and two doubles. Kalie Johnson was not far behind as she went 4-7 with one run, one RBI, and one stolen base. Morgan La Neve tacked on three hits of her own with an RBI.

Taylor Zanca, Shelbie Roberson, and Alexus Bailey had two hits each to add to the total while Brianna Wisby and Bailee Whitener both had one.

Game 1

In the first game against Nebraska-Kearney, the Lopers were able to score the first run after a bases-loaded fielder's choice allowed one run to cross the plate to take a 1-0 lead.

The Rangers bounced back in their half of the second inning after La Neve singled into right field. Roberson's speed was needed but she was unfortunately thrown out at second. Despite that, a solo homerun from Zanca allowed the Red-and-Black to tie the game 1-1. The Lopers responded with three runs in the bottom of the second to take back the lead 4-1.

Northwestern did not roll over and answered with another run in the top of the third. With the bases loaded, Bailey stepped up to the plate and crushed a hit into left field that scored Morgan Welch, who pinch ran for Jayden Flowers (hit by pitch). This made the score 2-4. Carrying their momentum into the bottom half of the inning the Rangers prevented the Lopers from extending their lead.

Nebraska-Kearney stepped up their defense in the top of the fourth inning and shut down the Rangers in order. After their great defensive performance, the Lopers pressed on the gas. A double and a triple added another run to their total and gave them a 5-2 advantage.

The fifth wasn't much better for the Rangers, despite another single from Detar. A few miscues from the Red-and-Black allowed another run to cross the plate to create a 6-2 lead for the Lopers.

The top of the sixth inning came with a single hit from Northwestern in a double from pinch hitter Whitener but she could not get across the plate. The Lopers used this to their advantage and tacked on two more runs with four hits with another double and triple as well as two singles to allow Nebraska-Kearney to take the game 10-2. The game finished in six innings due to the mercy rule that came into play.

Game 2

The Rangers came out screaming in the first inning of their match-up against Regis University. Detar began the rally with a single to second base, followed by a single from Johnson. La Neve stepped up to the plate next and drove in Detar for the first run of the game. The next run stemmed from a bases-loaded fielder's choice from Kailin Lian to extend the lead 2-0.

Regis bounced back in their half of the first inning as they scored five runs in the bottom half. The Rangers struggled with control on the mound and walked two-runs in. Two more singles with the bases loaded allowed Regis to take control of the lead with a score of 5-2.

Bailey continued to have a good weekend with another single to right field to start the top of the second, followed by a Detar double and an RBI single smoked through the left side by Johnson. The Red-and-Black took advantage of a throwing error as Johnson stole second which sent Detar home to make the score 4-5. The defense held strong through the bottom half of the inning to prevent Regis from scoring.

The defense was strong for both teams as the third inning was runless and the score stayed 5-4 with Regis leading.

Northwestern was unable to add on any runs in the top of the fourth inning as Regis shut down the offense in one-two-three fashion. Regis carried that momentum into their half of the inning and snuck a run across the plate on a sacrifice bunt to make the score 6-4. Regis continued scoring in the bottom of the fifth inning, after a double and an RBI single to extend their lead 7-4.

The Rangers broke their scoreless streak with a run in the top of the sixth inning. Roberson led off the inning with a single and a stolen base and used her speed to score on a single from Wisby to cut into the lead 5-7. Regis University refused to let the Rangers back in by scoring three more runs on three hits in the bottom of the sixth inning. A final double drove in the most recent run and gave Regis a 10-5 lead.

The Red-and-Black had one last inning to come back and began well with back-to-back singles from La Neve and Zanca how a double play stymied the Ranger rally. Northwestern took the loss with a final score of 10-5.

The Rangers' next game is Tuesday, February 18th against Newman University. Northwestern will travel to Wichita, Kan. With the doubleheader to be played at 2:00 and 4:00 p.m.
