Northwestern Splits with Newman on Home Opener

ALVA, Okla.– Northwestern Oklahoma State Rangers had their season opener Tuesday afternoon. The Rangers had just come off a big weekend and continued their out-of-conference play with a doubleheader against Newman University.

The game was originally supposed to be played in Wichita, Kan., but a last-minute change allowed Northwestern to host the match-up. The Red-and-Black now holds a 2-4 record without playing any conference games. Hannah Howell had an excellent showing on the mound in the first game while Kameron Ryer started in the circle for the second half of the doubleheader.

The Rangers tallied ten hits through both games with all ten coming in the first. Senior Alexus Bailey had herself a day as she went 3-for-4 at the plate while also collecting an RBI and scored three runs. Freshman Howell not only threw extremely well on the mound with six strikeouts but also held her own at the plate as she went 3-for-4 with five RBI's.

Morgan La Neve went 2-for-3 with three runs and had two RBI's of her own. Abby Detar and Jayden Solberg tallied the other two hits, while Taylor Zanca earned a walk in all four of her plate appearances.

Game 1

The Rangers offense came out firing and fought a tough battle in order to take the first game of the doubleheader against the Jets. Despite a runner on third, the Ranger defense really stepped up to prevent any runs to cross the plate in the top of the first inning. In their half of the inning, the Red-and-Black were able to take advantage of some miscues by the Jets defense and tacked on two runs with a bases-loaded double from Howell to make the score 2-0.

Newman fired back in the top of the second inning with four hits that included three singles and a double to take the lead with a score of 3-2. Northwestern was determined to continue to attack in the bottom half of the inning. Two more runs crossed the plate after Detar put the ball in play and created chaos for the defense. Freshman Howell came up clutch again in a bases-loaded situation to drive one more run in to take the lead 6-3.

Revenge on their mind, a bases-loaded walk earned a run for the Jets, followed by a single through the right side to earn another to make the score 5-6. A line drive through the right side appeared to score another run but quick thinking by Detar in right allowed her to throw out the runner at first to end the inning and kept a one-run lead. Despite back-to-back walks that gave the Rangers some momentum, they were unable to plate a run.

The Red-and-Black defense retired the Jets in one-two-three fashion in the top of the fourth inning. In the bottom half of the fourth, a bomb from La Neve over the right-field fence extended the Northwestern lead 7-5.

The Rangers continued to shut down the Jets with another quick top half of the fifth inning and used that momentum to add even more insurance to their lead. Back-to-back singles from Detar and Bailey opened the floor for La Neve to earn another RBI off a double off the right-field fence to score a run. A wild pitch scored Bailey and set the plate for Howell to earn her final two RBI's as she sent a double to left-center and allowed Zanca and La Neve to cross the plate and extended the lead to 11-5.

The sixth inning was quick on both sides with the Jets defense finally able to slow the hot Rangers bats and keep the score 11-5.

Newman threatened in their last half-inning through an error and a single, but back-to-back strikeouts from Howell and a final fly-out to center secured the Rangers second win of the season with a final score of 11-5.

Game 2

Unfortunately, Newman took the second half of the doubleheader into their own hands and was able to put out the hot bats completely an take the game 11-1.

In the top of the first inning, the Jets came out on fire as they had five hits and were able to score six runs quickly with four singles and a double with two walks as well. The defense then made quick work of the Red-and-Black as they were retired in order.

A pitching change in Alli Willis gave the Northwestern defense some new life as they shut down the hot Jets offense and keep the score sitting at 6-0. Unfortunately, the Newman defense continued on their dominant path with another one-two-three inning.

The Jet bats came alive again in the top of the third inning as a walk and three singles and a miscue by the Ranger defense allowed three more runs to cross the plate and gave Newman a 9-0 lead. Northwestern rallied in their half of the third and earned a run after Lauren Adcock reached on an error from the third baseman. She was moved to third by a sacrifice bunt and scored on a passed ball which made the score 9-1.

Newman wanted that run back and did just that on three hits, one a homerun to left field, and the other two stemming from two singles to take the lead 11-1. The Red-and-Black tried to challenge in the bottom of the fourth but could not reach base.

Northwestern kept the Jets to one single in the top of the fifth inning and attempted to come back in the bottom of the fifth but again could not reach base. The Newman kept the Rangers hitless through five innings with the mercy rule that came in to play which allowed them to take the game with a final score of 11-1.

The Rangers' next game is Friday, February 21st as they start Great American Conference play against Oklahoma Baptist University. Northwestern will host the four-game series with the first doubleheader to be played at 3:00 and 5:00 p.m.
