Northwestern Drops First Conference Doubleheader

ALVA, Okla.– Northwestern Oklahoma State University Rangers opened conference play against Oklahoma Baptist University Friday afternoon in the first half of a four-game series at home. The Rangers had just come off a split doubleheader against Newman University, and finally player their first Great American Conference match-up.

Despite great outings from multiple members of the pitching staff, the Rangers dropped both games to the Bison with scores of 10-5 and 11-0. The Red-and-Black now sits with a record of 2-6, with a conference mark of 0-2, while the Bison up their record to 6-8, with a 2-0 GAC record. Hannah Howell took her first loss of the year in the first game while Alexia Taylor earned her first start in a Ranger uniform.

Sophomore Kalie Johnson had a great outing offensively as she went 3-for-7 and had three of the Rangers nine hits on the day with two RBI's. Morgan La Neve went 1-for-4 with her second homerun of the season and 2 RBI's of her own. Abby Detar had two hits out of six at-bats and scored a run. Taylor Zanca, Emily Poindexter, and Kelsey Bushey had one hit apiece.

Game 1

The first three innings of the game were a pitcher's duel as Freshman Ranger Hannah Howell stepped up to keep the explosive Bison offense to zero runs.

Oklahoma Baptist threatened in the top of the third and the top of the fourth with two hits in each inning with the bases loaded but could not plate any runners. The Rangers could not get anything going until their half of the fourth inning when La Neve stepped up big to allow Northwestern to score first. After a single from Detar led-off the inning, La Neve sent a bomb deep over the left-field fence to take the lead 2-0.

The explosive offense of the Bison reared its head in the top of the fifth inning as Oklahoma Baptist tallied nine runs off seven hits and only one Ranger error. A two-run homerun started the rally followed by back-to-back-to-back hits to load the bases and plate five runners. A final double tacked on two more runs to take the lead 9-2.

The Rangers refused to roll over with a lead-off double from Poindexter. A walk from pinch-hitter Jayden Solberg allowed Johnson to send a single to left-center and plated one run. A passed ball scored the second run of the inning to cut the lead to 9-4.

The top half of the sixth inning came, and the Bison added another insurance run to their lead after reaching on an error and scoring on a single through the left side to extend the lead to 10-4. The Red-and-Black could not score in their half of the inning despite a lead-off walk from La Neve.

A scoreless top of the seventh gave hope to the Rangers as they carried that momentum into their final at-bat of the game. The Red-and-Black took advantage of some miscues by the OBU defense and scored a final run off a single from Johnson. Northwestern took the loss with a final score of 10-5. All the Bison's starting players had at least one hit in the game.

Game 2

The Bison offense did not skip a beat as they started off the second game with five runs off of five hits and one Ranger error. Back-to-back singles started the inning and allowed for three more singles through the inning which allowed the Bison to take a 5-0 lead. Northwestern was unable to answer and went down in their half of the first.

The Bison tacked on four more runs in the top of the second and didn't seem like they were going to slow down at any point. Five more singles gave Oklahoma Baptist a 9-0 lead. A lone hit from Zanca in the bottom of the second was all the Rangers could muster.

The Red-and-Black just could not seem to get their bats going in the second game with only three hits from the entire team. After shutting down the Bison in the top of the third a lone single from Johnson was not enough to get the Rangers on the board and OBU continued to lead 9-0.

The Bison were able to score again in the top of the fourth with a lead-off double, a hit-by-pitch, and a single loaded the bases for a ground-out RBI to the shortstop. With that run, the OBU lead extended to 10-0.

A solo homerun in the top of the fifth really seemed to push the game out of reach as the Bison led with a score of 11-0, which ended up being the final despite a single from Bushey in the bottom of the fifth. The Bison took the win in five innings per the mercy rule in softball.

Northwestern's next game is Saturday, February 22nd as they play their second half of the four-game series against Great American Conference opponent Oklahoma Baptist University. The first pitch of the doubleheader will be thrown at 12:00 p.m. Saturday afternoon.
