Honeycutt Makes History in Win over Arkansas Monticello

MONTICELLO, ARK-  Northwestern Oklahoma State traveled to Arkansas-Monticello to open their road trip in Arkansas this weekend. The Cotton Blossoms started strong, but the Rangers rallied in the second set to come back and take control of the match. Northwestern, after falling in set one, the Rangers would take the following three straight sets to win the match 3-1. 

Kaydee Honeycutt led the Rangers with 17 kills, followed by Addison Wimmer with 11 and Courtney Russell with eight. Jessica Thompson and Carmae Jones led the team with three blocks each, followed by Ravyn Burns with one. Abby Davis led the team in assists with 22, followed by Abigail Burns with 20. Tarra Parks with 22 digs, Wimmer with 20, and Abby Davis with 10 in the win. 

History was made in the third set for Kaydee Honeycutt as on the 12th kill of the evening she became the all-time leader in kills in Northwestern program history. The 12th kill gave here 1112 career kills surpassing Jennifer Eubanks at 1111 who made the record in 2019. Honeycutt now leads the program in career kills, most kills in a match, and most kills in a season. 

"Proud of all these girls to comeback from a tough first set loss. Excited for Kaydee Honeycutt on getting the all-time kill record!" stated head coach Fred Aubuchon

Northwestern improves to 8-15 on the season 3-7 in Great American Conference play as Arkansas- Monticello falls to 7-14 overall and 2-8 in the conference.  

SET 1:
Honeycutt opened the scoring for the match with a kill to give the Rangers the early 1-0 lead. The Blossoms followed, though, jumping out to a 6-3 lead following a 5-1 run on a couple of kills followed by a couple of Ranger errors. Northwestern would get kills from Davis and Wimmer to cut the deficit to two. Monticello holding the two-point lead, would go on an 11-0 run to open a double-digit lead in the first set at 21-8. Northwestern would respond with two straight points before Monticello would close out the set with a 25-10 victory to take a 1-0 match lead. 

SET 2: 

Arkansas-Monticello would carry the momentum into the second set scoring the first five points of set two to open a 5-0 lead forcing a Ranger timeout. The Red-and-Black out of the timeout would slowly start chipping away at the deficit following two 3-0 runs to spark the comeback fully. With Northwestern trailing 15-13, the Rangers would go on a 5-0 run to take an 18-15 lead in the set. The Rangers would receive kills from Jones, Honeycutt, and Wimmer on the run, along with Jones serving to force two errors by the home team. The Rangers would not lose the lead throughout the set. After Monticello ended the run, Northwestern jumped back out with a 5-1 run for a 23-18 lead. A Parks service ace closed the set out with a 25-22 victory to even the match at one. 

SET 3: 

Both teams were looking to jump out fast in the third set, with the set even at one. The teams would trade points to start the set with a 2-2 tied following a Monticello service error. This sparked four straight points from the Rangers on kills from Honeycutt and Davis to open a 5-2 lead. Northwestern would continue to put the pressure on the Cotton Blossoms following a kill from Ravyn Burns, pushing the Ranger lead to 9-6. The Rangers led 10-7 as they would trade points with Monticello continuing to hold the two-point lead at 10-8 before the Red-and-Black would once again gain a little more separation following a 5-1 run on kills by Honeycutt and Jones before a Davis service ace to take a 15-9 lead. The set was 17-12 Rangers led as a Russell kill would spark an 8-0 run for Northwestern to close and win the set at 25-12 over Arkansas Monticello. Abigail Burns would lead the charge with a service ace. A spread-out attack from the Rangers with three different players picking up kills in Wimmer, Honeycutt, and Burns. 

SET 4: 

Northwestern jumped out to a 5-1 lead early in the fourth set, looking to close the match out with three straight-set wins. Honeycutt opened the scoring and gave the Rangers their fifth point. With Parks serving, this would force two attack errors from Monticello. The Rangers would not allow Monticello to get too much closer as they would trade point for point, holding the four-point lead at 7-3 following a Monticello service error. Northwestern leading 8-4, the Red-and-Black would go on a 6-0 run to take a 14-4 lead. Jones is serving for the Rangers on the run, followed by back-to-back kills from Wimmer and a Russell kill to take the double-digit lead. Arkansas Monticello would get as close as four in the set at 19-15, but Northwestern answered right back, keeping it there. A 3-0 run including two kills from Russell opened a 24-17 lead and match point for Monticello. A kill from Ravyn Burns closed the match out with a 25-19 set victory and a 3-1 match win. 

The Red-and-Black will be back in action Saturday morning at 11 AM as they are set to take on Southern Arkansas Saturday morning, looking to win the third straight game.
