MAGNOLIA, ARK- Northwestern Oklahoma State completed the weekend sweep in Arkansas, winning Friday night over Arkansas Monticello and Saturday over Southern Arkansas. Northwestern would win the second, third and fifth set to complete the match win after a dominant fifth set to win 15-4 to take the match.
Northwestern improves to 9-15 on the season and 4-7 in Great American Conference play while SOuthern Arkansas falls to 5-16 and 1-10 in the conference.
The Rangers were led in kills by Kaydee Honeycutt with 28 on the afternoon. The 28 kills set a new program high for a single amount of kills in a match, with 28 breaking her own previous record of 26. Addison Wimmer finished with nine and Courtney Russell with five. Ravyn Burns completed the game with ten blocks, followed by Carmae Jones with eight and Russell with five. Abigail Burns had 21 assists, followed by Abby Davis with 15 and Tarra Parks with 14. Wimmer led the team in digs with 22, followed by Parks with 21 and Burns with seven.
"Always tough to play on the road, but feel that we passed the test this weekend. In the last few matches, Carmae and Ravyn have really been stepping up at the net as our blocks per game keep improving. Also, Kaydee Honeycutt continues to have a huge senior year as she broke her own single-match kill record with 28." stated head coach Fred Aubuchon.
SET 1:
Northwestern is looking to carry the momentum from Friday's match into the Saturday morning game. Jessica Thompson got the scoring started with a kill to give the Rangers a 1-0 lead. The Muleriders answered with four straight points to take their first lead and hold a 4-1 lead. Southern Arkansas would open a 9-3 lead over the Rangers. Northwestern would storm back with a 5-0 run led by Wimmer with two kills and a Honeycutt kill to bring the Rangers back to a two-point deficit. Southern Arkansas would keep the Rangers trailing, though with a small run on their own to follow to build a 16-11 lead. Northwestern would use two 3-0 runs to come back and tie the set at 22-22 following a kill from Honeycutt. Southern Arkansas would close set one out on a 3-0 run to win the opening set 25-22 over the Rangers.
SET 2:
The Red-and-Black were ready to answer back in the second set, jumping out first with a Wimmer service ace. The match would stay even throughout the early part of the second set with five ties in the opening 14 points—the last one by a kill from Wimmer. Neither team would allow one to gain any separation as the teams would trade point for point throughout the set at 11-11, 13-13, 15-15. Northwestern would take three straight points following back-to-back kills by Wimmer and an error from the Muleriders for the Rangers to gain an 18-15 lead. Following one point from the home team, a kill from Madison Dehlinger would start another three consecutive point run for the Rangers to open a 21-16 lead, the largest of the second set. The Mulriders would come racing back, though, with four straight points to bring their deficit to one. With the score of 21-20 in favor of the Rangers, the Red-and-Black would take the next four points to close the set win 25-22. This was led by three kills from Honeycutt before a Mulerider error following a serve from Parks. The Rangers would even the match at 1-1.
SET 3:
The match was even between the Muleriders and the Rangers as the two teams battled in set three again. Each team was trying to jump out fast with four quick points to have three ties within the opening eight points of the set. With the score even 4-4, Northwestern scored three of the following four points to take a 7-5 lead on a Russell kill followed by a Ravyn Burns kill. The Muleriders answered back with a 4-0 run to take a 9-7 lead over the Rangers. Northwestern would follow their run with five straight points, started by a Wimmer kill and multiple attack errors from Southern Arkansas to open a 12-9 lead over the home team. Southern Arkansas was able to stop the run, but Northwestern, following one Mulerider point, would get four more for a total of an 8-1 run to open a six-point lead. This run was led by a Honeycutt kill and a service ace from Parks. Southern Arkansas would battle back to get as close as one before the Rangers pushed their lead back at 18-17. Northwestern would go on a 3-0 run started by two Honeycutt kills to help win the set 25-20 over Southern Arkansas to take a 2-1 match lead over the Muleriders.
SET 4:
The Rangers were looking to close the match out in the fourth set as they opened a 4-2 lead with two kills from Honeycutt and one from Dehlinger. After that score, though, these two teams would continue to trade points as the Rangers held the two-point lead to 9-7. Northwestern would then jump on a 3-0 run to build a 12-8 lead over the Muleriders. Southern Arkansas would make their comeback with the Rangers holding a 15-9 lead Southern Arkansas would score five straight to bring their deficit back to one. Honeycutt would end their run and help push the Rangers to put up 19-17, but Southern Arkansas would follow with another 4-0 runt take a 21-19 lead over the Rangers. The Muleriders would hold the lead from their closing set four out with a 25-22 win to even the match at two.
SET 5:
Northwestern looking to bounce back and close the match out with a victory, answered back fast. With the score even at 2-2, the Rangers would use an 8-0 run to open a large 10-2 lead in the fifth set. A block started this from Courtney Russell for one of two blocks on the run. Honeycutt would add three kills on the run as well, along with a service ace from Parks. Northwestern would then continue to put the pressure on not allowing any comeback closing the set on a 4-1 run led by a block this time from Dehlinger and Carmae Jones. Two straight Honeycutt kills would end the match, giving the Rangers a 15-4 set victory and a 3-2 match win over Southern Arkansas.
The Rangers will be back in action Thursday October 28th on the road against Oklahoma Baptist in Shawnee Oklahoma with the match set to start at 7:00 PM as the Rangers look for their fourth straight win.
