Four Forced Turnovers Help Lead to Ranger Victory Saturday Afternoon

Alva, Okla – The Ranger Football team hosted the Crimson Storm of Southern Nazarene Saturday afternoon for game eight of the season. The Rangers took advantage of the opportunities including a strong opening quarter to gain the lead in which the team would hold on to as Northwestern would win the game 47-27.

The Crimson Storm fall to 1-7 on the season as the Rangers pickup their first win of the season, improving their record to 1-7.

Quarterback Tanner Clarkson threw for 238 passing yards for the game. Calion Baker and Clarkson ended the game with two touchdowns each on the afternoon. Torrence Stevens and Devond Blair, Jr. both had one touchdown.

Brian Holiday led the rangers with a total of 14 tackles. Dax Benway had 12 tackles. Alejandro Aaron and James Ellis each with 10 tackles.

The Rangers would get on the board first with a three-yard touchdown pass thrown by Clarkson to Stevens in the fifth minute of play in the first quarter. The Rangers would end the first quarter leading 7-0.

Southern Nazarene would answer back quickly at the beginning of the second quarter with an 11-yard rush from Jarvis Davis, tying the game 7-7 with 14:50 left in the second quarter.

The Rangers would answer back with a drive down the field in which would result in a Connor O'Neal 34-yard field goal attempt that was good with 10:45 left in the second quarter pulled the Rangers ahead 10-7.

The defense responded with a stop following the Rangers score as Wacy Williams had his first interception of the year on the Rangers 18-yard line with five minutes left in the second quarter. This would lead to point for the Rangers as shortly after, Baker caught a nine-yard pass from Clarkson for a Ranger touchdown, increasing the Northwestern lead to 17-7.

Right before half-time, the Crimson Storm would score a touchdown with 1:50 left in the second quarter, resulting in a 17-14 game. Baker would score his second touchdown of the game in the second quarter on a one-yard rush into the Crimson Storm end zone.

The Rangers led the Crimson Storm 24-14 going into halftime.

The Rangers came out strong in the second half with a forced fumble picked up by Nehemiah Lewis, resulting in the Rangers' ball. With three minutes left in the third quarter, Clarkson would score his second touchdown resulting on a two-yard rush into the Southern Nazarene end zone. The Rangers would open a 30-14 lead in the third quarter.

The Red-and-Black would continue to carry the momentum as after forcing a stop and getting the ball back O'Neal would hit a 23-yard field goal attempt early in the fourth quarter, increasing the Ranger lead to 33-14. The Rangers safety Aaron had his first interception of the 2021 season with nine minutes left of play. The ball was caught on the Crimson Storms 33-yard line.

Blair would score his first touchdown of the game from a pass down the middle of the field from Stevens on a reverse play resulting in a 38-yard touchdown. Rangers opened a big lead at 40-14 with nine minutes left in the fourth quarter.

Southern Nazarene answered back with a 17-yard rushing touchdown from Angel Ramirez, bringing the score to 40-21.

Clarkson would score his second touchdown in the final six minutes coming from a two-yard rushing touchdown into the endzone. The Rangers lead was now 47-21.

At the end of the fourth quarter, the Crimson Storm scored their fourth touchdown from a Brandon Perez rushing touchdown to the right for three yards into the Rangers endzone.

Terry Atta-Peters had his first interception of the season from a misthrown ball on the Rangers 30-yard line to seal the victory for the Rangers Saturday afternoon with a final score of 47-27. 

The Rangers will host the Bisons of Harding University on Oct. 30th at 2 PM. The Bison are currently 7-1 on the season.
