Rangers Defeat Tigers For First Conference Win of the Season

Alva, Okla- The Rangers were looking for another big win over the Tigers of East Central as Northwestern hosted their third straight home game second in conference play. The Red-and-Black were coming in strong as they looked for their first conference win of the 2021 season. Northwestern did just that with a 4-1 victory to earn their first Great American Conference victory since November of 2019. The Rangers used two goals in each half to earn the victory Monday evening.

The Rangers defeated the Tigers 4-1 to improve to 6-1-1 on the season (1-0-1 in GAC) as the Tigers fall to 1-6-0 (0-3 in GAC). Abby Nunez and Tiara Campbell both had two goals in the game.

The Tigers outshot the Rangers 19-17 but only having 12 of those shots on goal.

The Rangers had a variety of players look for chances on target. Nunez had four shots, three being on goal. Carlie Massingale had three shots in the game, and Campbell had three shots on target. Callie Haneborg, with one shot in the match which was on target.

Reagan Allen played all 90 minutes and was faced with 12 shots on the night.

The Rangers continued to have a strong start as at the beginning of the first half would strike first with a goal in the fourth minute by Nunez assisted by Abby McLaughlin. The goal came from a corner kick taken by Kailani Kealoha. The ball was headed down by McLaughlin and found the feet of Nunez, which resulted in the ball hitting the back of the net. The goal by Nunez gave the Rangers the early 1-0 lead.

Kaylee Bruce for the Tigers would answer back in the 26th minute with a ball that hit the crossbar and went straight down over the goal line, tying the game at one.
Nunez answered back eight minutes later with a goal in the 34th minute by a cross from Isabella Mcmillan.

The Rangers took a 2-1 lead into halftime over the Tigers. East Central was outshooting the Rangers 11-6 at the break.

The Rangers came out competitive as they were looking to extend their 2-1 lead. Campbell got her first goal of the match in the 63rd minute with the assist from Nunez. Campbell got around her player and took on the Tigers goalkeeper one-on-one placing the ball on the lower right side of the net. Campbell answered back in the 70th minute with McLaughlin got her second assist of the night by crossing the ball of the crossbar in front of Campbell, who would send to the back of the net for her second goal of the night and 11th of the season.

"A great team win tonight for the Rangers. In the first half, they gave us a lot of trouble. We made a few adjustments at halftime and credit to our girls for executing very well to put the game away in the second half," says coach Alex Piekarski.

The Red-and-Black's defense continued their success, especially on a second-half sequence where the Tigers would take three shots on goal where Allen stopped the original before Jazlyn Norwood would black the second attempt in front of the goal before Allen saved the third try by the Tiger attack.

The Rangers are back on the road as they travel to Searcy, Arkansas, to face off against the Bisons of Harding University on Oct. 7th at 5 PM, and then travel to Arkadelphia to play the Tigers of Ouachita Baptist on Oct. 9th at noon.
