Rangers Come Up Short in Saturday's Game Against the Savage Storm

Alva, Okla.- Northwestern Oklahoma State basketball returned to conference play on Saturday in a loss to Southeastern Oklahoma State 72-58. The Savage Storm used a 13-5 run midway through the first half to gain a 10 point lead as the Rangers would not lead again.

The Rangers fall to 7-3 on the season and 2-2 in conference play as the Savage Storm improve to 9-1 overall with a 4-0 GAC record.

Northwestern was led by Larry White and Malik Parsons, scoring 12 each for two of the three Rangers in double figures as Bubba Furlong was the other with 10. Furlong led the team with seven rebounds, three assists, and three blocks in the game. Eric Hancik led in rebounds with five rebounds tied with Furlong.

The Red-and-Black got the scoring started early with a Parsons three-pointer to give Northwestern the early lead. After a Dworsky layup put the Storm on the board, the two teams would go on a two-minute scoring drought as neither team would score a field goal until about 16 minutes left in half, trading layups. Northwestern held an early 6-4 advantage at the opening media timeout. The game was locked at 10-10 about halfway through the opening half on a Furlong layup. Southeastern would go on a quick 4-0 spurt to take a 17-13 lead, but a Free three-pointer quickly put the Rangers back within one.

Southeastern would answer with a 7-0 run to push their lead to eight points at 24-16. As Northwestern tried to answer back, Southeastern was there to stop any run as they answered back by making the Ranger deficit double digits at 28-18. Southeastern continued to put the pressure on the Rangers with an 8-0 run extending their lead to 18 points in the opening half at 38-20.

Northwestern would hold the Savage Storm scoreless in the final two minutes of the half, bringing the deficit to 12 at the break as the Rangers looked to climb back into the game.

Southeastern held a 42-30 halftime lead over Northwestern.

The Rangers continued the run opening the second half with the first five points out of the break, cutting the deficit to seven. That would be as close as the Rangers could get, though. Southeastern responded with a quick 7-0 run to push their lead back to 14.

With Southeastern holding a 54-38 lead, the defenses would amp upholding each other scoreless from the 15:13 mark to the 13:12 mark for over two minutes without a point. The Rangers trailed by 15 at 57-42, following a Dworsky layup halfway through the second half.

Savage Storm held that 15 point advantage as they took a 65-50 lead with 4:18 left in the game as they would answer every Northwestern run. The closest the Rangers could get back to was 11 following two White foul shots at 67-56.

Free and Dworsky would trade layups in the final minute to keep the deficit at 14 with a 72-58 score.

The score would stay there as the Savage Storm would hold onto a 72-58 victory over the Rangers Saturday afternoon.

The Rangers will be back in action following a break as the team will travel to Arkansas to take on Southern Arkansas and Arkansas Monticello on December 30th and January 1st.
