Northwestern Drops Thursday Evening Game to Southern Arkansas

MAGNOLIA, ARK- Northwestern Oklahoma State returned to play Thursday evening following the holiday break. Southern Arkansas came away with the win following a 22-9 run to open the game, not allowing the Rangers to lead at any point. The Mulreiders would win this game 69-49.

The loss drops the Rangers to 7-4 on the season with a 2-3 conference record in the Great American Conference.

Larry White and Ravel Moody led northwestern as the only two double-figure scorers with 15 and 12, respectively. Eric Hancik and Malik Parsons had seven rebounds, while three different players had two steals from Hancik, Moody, and Anthony Jones.

In the game's opening minute, both teams would not be able to capitalize on different opportunities before a Garrett three-pointer opened the scoring with the first points of the game and an early 3-0 lead for the Muleriders. They would score the first six points of the game before a Furlong layup would get the Rangers on the board, trailing 6-2. A Furlong jumper cut the deficit to 9-6 at the opening media timeout. The Rangers got as close as 11-9 out of the break, but the Mulriders scored the next eight straight to open a 19-9 advantage with just 10 minutes left in the opening half.

The Mulriders continued to hold the 10 points at 22-12, just under the eight media timeout. The two teams traded points out of the break before the Rangers ended a two-minute scoring drought between the two teams at 6:25 on a Chance Love layup. An Aaron Lucas three pushed the Mulriders back up by 12 points right before the last media timeout of the opening half. Northwestern got it back under nine before a Garrett steal, setting up a Lucas final second layup to put the Muleriders back up by eleven. Southern Arkansas would hold the 37-26 lead at the half over the Rangers.

With the Rangers looking to change the momentum early, Southern Arkansas had other ideas scoring the first five points and building their largest lead of the day at 41-26 before White would hit a floater to put the Rangers on the board. The defensive intensity between the two teams would pick up as not a single point scored from the 18:29 to 15:42 mark before SOuthern Arkansas would score, White, scored for the Rangers the following possession. Southern Arkansas continued to trade points before opening their largest lead to this point in the game at 50-32. Southern Arkansas would follow with a 10-0 run extending their lead past 20.

In the second half, Southern Arkansas would open their largest lead at 28 points with a 63-35 lead at the 6:43 mark. The defense once again would cause problems as a scoring drought from the 5:27-3:33 left in the game. The Rangers would score the final five points of the game following a Moody three-pointer to make the game 69-49.

The Muelriders would go on to win the Thursday evening matchup 69-49.
