Rangers Fall to the Bison Saturday Afternoon

 Shawnee, Okla.- Northwestern Men's, Basketball teams fell on Saturday afternoon 76-70 to the Bison of Oklahoma Baptist on the road. The Bison used a late 8-0 run in the second half to build a 10 point lead that the Rangers were never able to even the score from there to lose the game.

The Red-and-Black dropped to 2-9 on the season, 0-9 in Great American Conference play after the loss Saturday afternoon. Oklahoma Baptist improves to 11-4 overall in the season and 11-3 in conference play.

Northwestern was led in points by Deon Barrett with 17 points on the game on 5-12 from beyond the arc. He was joined in double figures by Parrish Hewitt, finished with 11 points for his eighth straight double-digit game. Arturro Bingham finished the game with a season-high 12 points on 5-9 from the field. Bubba Furlong was the fourth Ranger with 12 points and 11 rebounds finished the day with a double-double his fifth on the season. The 11 rebounds led the Rangers on the day and tied a game-high between both teams. Barrett led the Rangers with four assists

The Bison were led by Jarius Hicklen who finished with 23 points for a game-high as one of two Bison in double digits. Harrison Stoddart was the other with 12 points. Stoddart led with 11 rebounds for the Bison followed by Wilcox. Hicklen finished with a team-high four assists. 

The game between the Rangers and Bison started as expected in an extremely defensive battle. Each team opened the game 0-3 from the field before the Bison got the scoring started with a three from Trey Green close to three minutes into the game to open the scoring. In the opening minutes before the media timeout. Green hit back-to-back threes to give them the early 6-0 lead.

Out of the first media timeout, the Rangers started their run. Rangers would knock down back-to-back threes to even the score at six from Hewitt and Bingham. Furlong would give the Rangers their first lead, capping off an 8-0 run for the Rangers. Teams would start to trade baskets as Bingham scored the next five Ranger points. At the second media timeout, the game was knotted at 15.

After Oklahoma Baptist tried to get out to a large lead Deon Barrett helped the Rangers regain the lead at 24-22 following a layup and a three. The Bison would go on their largest lead of the half after the Rangers took a 29-28 following an Oscar Maldonado foul shots. The Bison opened a six-point lead following a 7-0 run to take a 35-29 lead. Bingham would hit a buzzer-beater layup at the closure of the first half to send the Rangers into the break down 35-33.

Bingham led all scorers at the break with 10 points on 4-5 shooting. The Bison were led by Trey Green with nine points. The Bison finished the first half with eight threes made. The first half featured 12 lead changes with six different ties throughout the first half.

Rangers opened the second half fast as the Rangers regained the lead at 41-40 following an Oscar Maldonado three and Justin Blunt foul shots. As each team's defense continued to pick up the intensity. After the game was even at 48, there was a two-minute scoring drought for each team.

Oklahoma Baptist made the difference right before the middle of the half with an 8-0 run to open a 56-48 run. Rangers would cut the deficit to four before the final media timeout of the half. Jarius Hicklen's jump shot would bring the game back to eight with two minutes remaining. The Rangers would cut it to five at 67-62 but, that would be the closest the Rangers would get.

The Bison extended the lead back to 10 at 72-62 in the final minute. Peck and Barrett hitting back-to-back threes brought it back to five. A Hicklen foul shot closed out the game at 76-70 in favor of the Bison.

The Rangers will be back in action Monday night on rivalry night as basketball takes on Southwestern Oklahoma State Bulldogs at 7:30 following the conclusion of the Lady Rangers game that tips-off at 5:30.
