Rangers Fall Saturday Afternoon to Oklahoma Baptist

ALVA, Okla.- Northwestern Oklahoma State traveled to Shawnee Saturday to take on the Bison of Oklahoma Baptist. The Bison took advantage of their penalty kick opportunity in the final two minutes of the opening half to gain the lead in which they would not lose. The Bison would defeat the Rangers 2-0 on Saturday afternoon.

The win moves Oklahoma Baptist to 4-1-1 on the season, 3-0 in Great American Conference play, while Northwestern falls to 0-2 on the season and conference play.

The Red-and-Black were led in shots by Natalie Leathers and Kailani Kealoha, each had one shot. Reyna Gonzalez would finish the game with 10 saves on the afternoon

Throughout the majority of the first half, the Rangers and Bison were in a defensive battle. Reyna Gonzalez, the Rangers goalkeeper, would finish the first half saving all seven shots on goal she would face. Oklahoma Baptist had the first-half advantage in shots 9-0 along with 7-0 on goal.

Northwestern saw opportunities in the first half as well in the opening half with three corner kick tries but were not able to capitalize as the Bison defense was able to stop the corner kick tries from the Red-and-Black offense.

The first half was physical as there were ten total fouls in the half, seven from the Bison and three from the Rangers.  

The half remained scoreless until the 42:41 mark of the first half as Kaylee Swaner, of Oklahoma Baptist, would earn a penalty kick after getting fouled inside the box. Swaner would score off the penalty kick to take a 1-0 lead, which they would take into the break.

The Bison would come out of the second half fast with four shots in the opening four minutes of the second half. Oklahoma Baptist and Northwestern's defense would continue to respond to one another's attack. Kailani Kealoha would get the Rangers' first shot at the 58-minute mark.

Oklahoma Baptist offense would strike again however in the 63rd minute of the game, as Tori Kitchel put a shot on goal as Gonzalez would block for the save. However, Hannah White was there for the rebound scoring on the next shot extending the home team's lead to 2-0.

Rangers would stay aggressive though, having another corner kick opportunity, with their second shot of the afternoon from Natalie Leathers, but the Bison defense would prevail.

Oklahoma Baptist would hold on to win 2-0 Saturday afternoon and would outshoot the Rangers 22-2 and 12-0 on goal. The Rangers had four corner kicks to a Bison 11. Bison would finish with 16 fouls to a Rangers seven.

The Rangers will return to action on Saturday, March 20th as they finish their road part of the schedule in Arkadelphia, as they take on Ouachita Baptist at 11 AM.
