Northwestern Honors Four Seniors Before the Saturday Match

ALVA, Okla. - The Northwestern Rangers soccer team played their home opener in Alva Saturday afternoon for senior day. As four seniors in Reyna Gonzalez, Caitlyn Bidart, Hudsyn Childs, and Alma Garay were honored before kickoff took place against Southern Nazarene. The Crimson Storm finished the match with a 1-0 win in double overtime behind a goal at the 103:51 mark of the match.

Northwestern was led in shots by Lily Anderson, with five shots, including two on goal. Callie Haneborg led shots on goal for the Rangers with three overall, which were all on goal. Reilly Marks and Faith Nino each had two shots, including one on goal. Trinity Williams and Sydne Edmiston each had one shot, with Williams' shot going on goal. Rachel Bailey and Carlie Massingale rounded out the Northwestern shot attempts with one each giving Northwestern 16 on the day, including nine on the net.

Gonzalez, the Red-and-Black senior goalkeeper, finished the afternoon with eight saves on nine attempts in the Saturday game against Southern Nazarene.

The Rangers tried to start fast in this game with three shots along with three corner kick tries in the opening 10 minutes. Massingale attempted to get things going with the first shot on goal for the game, but it was blocked on the bottom left by the SNU goalkeeper. Anderson had the next two shots each on goal, but Maci Attalla again completed the saves.

The Crimson Storm would get their first shot on goal 17 minutes into the game from Hope Berry, but Gonzalez would make the save with the shot toward the bottom left side of the goal. Southern Nazarene would get two more shots off but once again would be saved, keeping the score even 0-0 halfway through the opening half.

Following substitutions for both teams, the Rangers once again were out on the attack getting two more shots off within two minutes of one another, but again, Attalla made the save.

The game would go into the break still 0-0 as the Rangers led in shots 8-5 after the first half, along with 5-1 in corner kick tries.

The Crimson Storm was the team starting fast in the second half with a shot on goal less than a minute into the second half, however, missing above the goal. The Storm kept the pressure on the Rangers, though, following an offside with two more shots within 15 seconds, with Gonzalez making the save on the bottom right side of the goal.

This would set up the Rangers attack with a shot from Marks that was saved by Attalla. The teams would trade possession for the next few minutes before the Rangers had the next three shots as the game stayed even 0-0 halfway through the second half.

Bailey and Nino would have the final shots of the half for the Rangers, followed by three Southern Nazarene shots. Two of those three shots being blocked by the Rangers defense, followed by a save by Gonzalez to hold the game 0-0 after two full halves.

The first overtime was much like the opening two halves, extremely defensive with both defenses not letting anything happen offensively. Southern Nazarene would lead in shots 2-1 in the opening overtime, including a corner kick try, but the Ranger defense again would prevail, keeping the game 0-0 in the 2nd overtime.

The Crimson Storm goal would occur close to four minutes into the second overtime. Each team would have one shot in that second overtime. Southern Nazarene would come away with the goal, though from Josie Van Pelt at the 103:51 mark. Southern Nazarene led in shots 22-16, as the shots on goal were even though 9-9 on the afternoon.

The Rangers fall to 0-4-1 in the spring season, as Southern Nazarene moves to 1-4-0 on the season. The Red-and-Black will be back in action on Tuesday, March 30th playing host to East Central to conclude the regular season before conference playoffs begin.
