Rangers Volleyball Completes Match Sweep over Southern Nazarene

Bethany, Okla.- The Rangers traveled to Southern Nazarene for the second conference match of the season. Northwestern would use a strong opening set to build momentum and carry it through the game's entirety, sweeping the Crimson Storm 3-0(25-22, 25-18,25-22). 

Northwestern was led in the match by Kaydee Honeycutt in kills with 13 on the evening. Addison Wimmer followed her with 11 and Raven Burns with six. Abigail Burns had 22 assists on the night, followed by Abby Davis with 14. Tarra Parks had 16 digs, followed by Wimmer with 13 to help the Rangers win and improve to 1-1 in the Great American Conference. 

"I feel that we finally took that next step as a team. We have been playing well, but it hasn't produced wins and tonight was crucial as our biggest goal is success in the conference. Proud of our play tonight" stated head coach Fred Aubuchon on the win.

Set 1: 

The Rangers battled with the Crimson Storm in the opening set trading point for point most of the opening set. After the Rangers took the opening point on a Wimmer kill, the Storm took the following three points of the set. The Rangers answered with the next three to even the set. The teams would continue to battle with five ties within the first 20 points of the set as the two teams were locked at 10-10  following a kill from Ravyn Burns. At that mark, Northwestern found a solid run to gain some separation in the score. Northwestern would go on a 6-1 run to open an 18-13 lead over the Storm, forcing a timeout. Austyn Pine would have back-to-back blocks on the Rangers'Rangers' run. Northwestern would continue to carry the momentum to a 20-15 lead. The Crimson Storm would not go away, though, scoring six of the following seven points late in the set to cut the deficit at two for a 23-21 Rangers lead, forcing a timeout. Out of the timeout, the Rangers would close out the opening set with back-to-back kills from Honeycutt for two of her seven kills in set one to give the Rangers a 25-23 set one win, for a 1-0 match lead. 

Set 2: 

Northwestern continued the momentum into the second set from an opening kill from Courtney Russell. The Rangers would take a 5-1 lead following a service ace from Abby Davis. Northwestern would receive a kill from Wimmer to take a 7-3 lead as the Crimson Storm called a timeout. The Rangers continued to strike with three of the following four points on a kill from Ravyn Burns, opening an 11-5 lead. After the teams would trade a few points, the Crimson Storm tried to make their push with four straight points to cut the Rangers lead to two, but Northwestern would once again respond with a 6-1 run, including four consecutive points to build the lead back to 18-12 following a Honeycutt kill. A kill from Wimmer and back-to-back Storm attack errors pushed the Rangers lead back to 21-15. Northwestern came out firing with three straight points from two Honeycutt kills out of the timeout, building a 24-15 lead. SNU would try to come back with the next three points, but ultimately the Rangers would close the set out with a 25-18 set two win to take a 2-0 match lead. 

Set 3: 

The Crimson Storm would try and change the momentum, starting the third set with three of the opening four points of the set. However, the Rangers would battle back with kills from Honeycutt and Pine to tie the set at 5-5. The set would go to 7-7 before the Rangers made their move with three straight points started by a R. Burns kill to take a 10-7 lead over the Crimson Storm. After a few sets of trading points, Wimmer would push the Rangers lead to 14-10, forcing a timeout by SNU. The Red-and-Black continued to strike following the timeout with four consecutive points started by a Wimmer kill and continued through Maggie Peterson serves throughout the run. The Rangers lead was built to 19-10 before the Crimson Storm stopped the run. Madison Dehlinger gained the point back with a kill to start the next Rangers run. The Crimson Storm would respond with an 8-0 run to bring their deficit down to three at 21-18 Ranger lead. Ravyn Burns would end the Crimson Storm run out of a timeout to push the Rangers'Rangers' lead back at 22-18. A block by Courtney Russell and Madison Dehlinger would give the Red-and-Black a 24-20 lead after a long rally. A Honeycutt kill would close out the match win for the Rangers with a set three victory 25-22. 

Northwestern will be back in action as they return home in Percefull Fieldhouse for three matches this weekend. On Friday, the Red-and-Black will take on Great American Conference opponent Oklahoma Baptist followed by a doubleheader on Saturday. The first match is at 1 PM against Bethel College followed by 3 PM against Central Christian College.
