Box Score EMPORIA, KANSAS - The Ranger Baseball team had a Monday afternoon non-conference game against Emporia State in Kansas for a single game. Emporia used a four run fourth inning to take a 4-3 lead at the time before winning 5-4 in ten innings.
The Ranger offense was led by Brett Erickson, Shaughn Kelly, Dylan Norsen, and Bryan Guerrero with two hits each. Norsen led the team with a 2-RBI afternoon, as Kelly and Erickson picking up the other RBI.
Zach McEachern took the ball in the game throwing 3.1 innings allowing three runs on four hits. Tate Schuerman, Cade Phelps, and Connor Gibosn pitched in relief for the Rangers in the loss.
The Rangers jumped out fast in the game with a three run opening inning. Erickson started the game with a single to left field. Holdren and Hoffman walked before Kelly hit an RBI single to center field as the Rangers took an early 1-0 lead over the Hornets. Norsen followed with a 2-RBI double down the left field line scoring Kelly and Hoffman for a 3-0 lead.
Emporia State put two runners on base in the bottom half of the first inning, following a walk and a hit by pitch had runners on first and second before a fly out to center field ended the inning.
The teams traded zeros in the second inning as McEachren used a double play to short to end the second inning as the Rangers held a 3-0 lead through two innings.
In the third the Rangers looked to extend their 3-0 lead as they loaded the bases following a Holdren walk, Kelly single and a Gavin Mendoza walk. Emporia escaped with no damage done holding the Ranger lead at 3-0.
In the Hornet half of the third inning they loaded the bases with two outs. McEachern struckout the final hitter of the inning as the Rangers continued to hold the 3-0 lead.
Emporia State's offense broke through in the fourth inning following a leadoff single and a double by Sturdy put runners on second and third. Hamm followed with an RBI single scoring the first run for the Hornets. Chaput hit one back up the middle scoring Sturdy for a 3-2 Ranger lead. A balk forced in the tying run at 3-3. Carroll drove in the fourth run as Emporia took a 4-3 lead on a sacrifice fly to left field.
Schuermann retired the Hornets in order in their half of the fifth as the Rangers looked to come back. Rangers put two runners on in the sixth inning on two singles and a wild pitch before Emporia escaped with no damage done keeping the Rangers trailing.
Northwestern moved a runner into scoring position in the seventh inning as Hoffman singled before moving to second on a balk. The Red-and-Black were unable to move him home as the game remained 4-3 in favor of the Hornets.
The Rangers offense broke through again in the 8th inning as Northwestern came through with a run to tie the game at 4-4. Norsen led the inning off with a walk before a double play erased runners on base. Chase Orrock had a single to left field before back to back singles from Guerrero and Erickson tied the game at four.
In the ninth inning both teams were retired in order as the game was locked at 4-4 after the teams traded zeros. The Rangers entered their first extra inning game of the season.
The Red-and-Black in their half of the tenth went down in order as the Hornets kept it at 4-4 before their half of the 10th inning. The inning started with a leadoff single by Racherbaumer. A sacrifice bunt pushed him to second with one out. After a walk and a hit batsman the bases were loaded with one out. A infield fly rule pop out kept the game 4-4 with two outs before a Hamm infield single up the middle pushed across the games winning run for a 5-4 Hornets victory over the Rangers.
Northwestern will return home for a Tuesday afternoon non-conference game against Northeastern before returning back home for conference play against Arkansas Tech over the weekend for a three game series.
