ALVA, OKLAHOMA - The Ranger baseball team opened a three game series in a big way Friday evening winning 18-8 over the Wonder Boys behind 23 hits in the win. Northwestern had two four run innings and a six run fourth to jump out to the big lead before closing out the 10 run win in seven innings.
The win improves the Rangers to 19-25 on the season with a 12-16 conference record.
Yugo Hamakawa led the team with four hits as every single Ranger that batted had at least one hit in the win. Brandon Holdren, Blake Hoffman, Hayden Priest, and Bryan Guerrero each had three hits. Holdren led the team with three-RBI off a three run home run.Â
Dylan Collins picked up his fifth win of the season after striking out two throwing 4.1 innings in win. Cade Phelps came in throwing 2.2 scoreless innings striking out two in those frames.Â
Both teams jumped out fast in the win as Arkansas Tech struck for two quick runs in their half of the inning. Stephenson led off with a single followed by a Maddux double to put runners on second and third before a sacrifice fly scored the first run. Medina later singled home the game's second run.Â
The Rangers first at bat started with them trailing 2-0 before Brett Erickson led off the inning with a solo home run to left center putting the Rangers on the board trailing 2-1. The inning continued with Hamakawa and Holdren hitting back to back singles. Hoffman continued the hit parade with a single to left field for the fourth straight hit to start the game. Kelly pushed the third run across on a productive ground out as the Rangers took their first lead at 3-2. Priest later drove home Hoffman for a 4-2 lead.Â
The Wonder Boys responded right away in the second inning with a solo home run cutting the Ranger lead down to 4-3. After a Maddux walk, a Detweiler two run home run gave the Wonder Boys a 5-4 lead in the second inning. They held that lead through the second inning after retiring the Rangers. Northwestern did threaten to score with the bases loaded but failed to score.Â
Collins kept Arkansas Tech at five after three innings before the Rangers scored four in the third to regain the lead after a leadoff double by Priest, Guerrero singled to right field to tie the game at five. With two runners on following a Erickson single, Holdren blasted a three run home run to center field to give the Rangers an 8-5 lead through three innings.Â
After Collins held the Wonder Boys scoreless for the second straight inning it allowed the Rangers to extend the lead. With two runners on base Joseph Frisby singled, scoring Brayden Koenig to take a 9-5 lead. Priest scored on a wild pitch for the 10th run as the Rangers led by five. The inning continued as Hamakawa doubled two runs in to take a 12-5 lead. Orrock then doubled to right center taking a 13-5 lead as Hamakawa came around to score. The final run of the inning was scored on a Hoffman RBI single for a 14-5 lead.Â
Arkansas Tech was ready to go away as Quiggins hit a two run home run to cut into the Ranger lead bringing the game to 14-7. Maddux drove in a run after getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded as the lead was now 14-8.Â
The Ranger answered right back though as three straight singles set up a big Northwestern inning as Priest scored on a passed ball for a 15-8 lead before an Erickson groundout followed by Hamakwa single pushed the lead to 17-8.Â
Phelps held the Wonder Boys scoreless in the sixth before Hayden Priest pushed the Rangers up by 10 on a solo home run to take an 18-8 lead. Phelps closed out the win after allowing a walk in the inning but was able to escape any damage and hold the win in seven innings for the Rangers.Â
Northwestern will return to action on Saturday afternoon with first pitch at 1:00 PM on senior day of the first of two games. The pre game ceremonies will begin at 12:30 before game one in the afternoon.
