Rangers Win On Walk-Off Single by Kelly

ALVA, OKLAHOMA - The Ranger baseball team returned to play Monday afternoon for a non-conference game pulling off a 4-3 win over the Hornets. Northwestern walked it off in the ninth inning on a Shaughn Kelly RBI single to left as Thomas Beiswanger scored the winning run.

The win improves the Rangers to 15-18 on the season snapping a three game losing streak. The loss drops Emporia State to 12-22 on the season.

Matthew Potts started Monday throwing seven innings allowing one earned run, two total, while striking out four Hornet hitters. Cade Phelps pitched in relief, throwing two innings allowing one unearned run while striking out one picking up the win for the Rangers.

Yugo Hamakawa and Blake Hoffman finished the game with three hits in the afternoon, leading the Rangers. Hoffman led the team with 2-RBIs in the afternoon. Kelly had the game winning single for his one RBI on the day.

The Rangers struck first after starter Potts worked around a runner in scoring position after a balk with a grounder back to the mound. Hamakawa and holdren each had a hit for second and third before a Hoffman single put the Rangers in front 2-0 after the first inning.

The teams traded zeros in the second inning after Potts retired the side in order before the Hornets struck for the first time in the third. A leadoff walk followed by a double put the Hornets in business for second and third one out. Carroll drove in the first run with a sacrifice fly to left field for their first run cutting the deficit down to 2-1.

Northwestern answered right back though with a leadoff double from Hamakawa before a Hoffman double brought him around to score, pushing the lead back to 3-1. Potts continued to be dialed in retiring the Hornets in order in the fourth inning. In the fifth he worked around a one out single and stolen base picking up a strikeout in the inning.

Emporia State scored their second run in the seventh after another perfect inning from Potts in the sixth. The Hornets had two straight hits before they took advantage of a Ranger error allowing the second run to come around, cutting the Ranger lead to 3-2.

Northwestern had two hits in the seventh trying to answer back but the Hornets escaped the Rangers two hits with a lineout double play back to the pitcher.

The Hornets were not ready to go down as they came back to tie the game in the ninth after Phelps threw a scoreless eighth inning. Following a walk and an error the Hornets tied the game on a single to left field for an unearned run. The Rangers escaped further damage on a line out double play.

Northwestern answered back though in the ninth inning to win in walk-off fashion as Beiswanger started things off with a one out single before Guerrero moved him to second. Kelly ended things with a line drive single into left field bringing home Beiswanger for the 4-3 victory over the Hornets.

Northwestern will be back in action on Tuesday against Northeastern State for their second straight non-conference game before traveling to Oklahoma Baptist over the weekend returning to conference play.
