ALVA, OKLAHOMA - Northwestern Oklahoma State dropped the home matchup against Oklahoma Baptist 68-66 in a game that came down to the final possession. Oklahoma Baptist hit two foul shots with the game tied 66-66 with 46 seconds left to take the two point lead in the final minute. The Bison held on for the two point victory.
The loss drops Northwestern to 7-7 on the season with a 3-7 conference mark, while the Bison improve to 7-3 on the year in conference.
Northwestern was led in scoring by Faith Simpson with 20 points as one of four double figure scorers. She was joined by Carly Craig with 16, Camille Thomas with 14 and Talayah Thomas with 13. Simpson led with 10 rebounds finishing the game with a double double.
FIRST QUARTER:
Carly Craig started the scoring Saturday afternoon with a jump shot to push the Rangers in front 2-0. Chrissen Harland followed with a three pointer as the Lady Rangers led 5-0 two minutes into the game. The Bison got on the board just over two minutes into the game on a three pointer to cut the lead down to two. Simpson and Thomas keep the pressure on the Bison with back-to-back layups taking a 9-5 lead halfway through the opening quarter. The Bison tied the game at nine before and eventually took their first lead at 12-11 on a three pointer by Savanna Malou. Faith Simpson scored four straight points to close out the first quarter as Northwestern held a 17-15 advantage through the first.
SECOND QUARTER:
Talayah Thomas opened the quarter with a jump shot off of an offensive rebound by Faith Simpson for the assist. After a two minute scoring drought the Bison was able knock down foul shots to tie the game at 19-19. Craig fired back with a three pointer for a 22-19 lead again. Oklahoma Baptist regained the lead at 26-24 following a three pointer with 4:24 left in the half. Talayah Thomas ended the Lady Ranger scoring drought knocking down a three pointer bringing the game back within one. The game was tied at 27-27 before Northwestern went on a 5-0 run to close out the half as Craig knocked down her third three of the half followed by a Camille Thomas layup. Northwestern led 32-27 at the break.
Third Quarter:
Thomas opened the third quarter with a jump shot mid range for a 34-27 lead with 9:58 remaining in the quarter. The teams traded foul shots as the Rangers held a four point lead before OKlahoma Baptist tied the game at 38-38 with 6:20 remaining in the quarter. Simpson layup brought the game back within one as the Rangers trailed 45-44. Carly Craig hit back to back three pointers including one at the third quarter buzzer as the Lady Rangers trailed 51-50 heading into the final quarter.
Fourth Quarter:
Talayah Thomas opened the fourth quarter with a three pointer regaining the lead for Northwestern 53-51. The teams traded a couple baskets as the game was locked at 55-55 with 8;26 left in the game. Northwestern knocked down four straight foul shots from Simpson and Camille Thomas regaining a 59-58 lead. Talayah Thomas answered a Bison three to tie the game at 61-61. The game remained tied at 66-66 with 2:05 left to play in the game. After a two minute scoring drought Oklahoma Baptist was able to win the game at the foul line on two foul shots to win 68-66.
The Lady Rangers hit the road Monday evening for a conference matchup against rival Southwestern Oklahoma State, before returning home for two games against Harding and Arkansas Tech over the weekend.
