SHAWNEE, OKLAHOMA - Northwestern Oklahoma State played their third straight road game this one at Oklahoma Baptist in Shawnee. The Ranger fell to the Bison 3-1 after Oklahoma Baptist jumped out early taking a 2-0 lead following a double digit set victory.
Northwestern Oklahoma State falls to 5-7 in Great American Conference play with a 9-13 record overall in the season.Â
The Rangers were led in kills by Erika Asencio Soriano with 20 on the evening along with Mariela Jimenez with 12. Abby Davis finished with a game high 33 assists while Brianda Diaz had a game high 24 digs. Asencio Soriano finished with a double-double adding 15 digs to her 20 kills.
SET ONE:Â
Oklahoma Baptist jumped on the board early with the first three points of the evening first off a kill from Jill Leslie. Asencio Soriano ended the run and put Northwestern on the board. Ece Ozdemir followed with a block. Ozdemir tied the first set at five following a kill assisted by Abby Davis. Northwestern continued to match points as a kill from Ozdemir kept Northwestern within one. However a kill by Jenna West started a 5-0 run forcing the Rangers into a timeout trailing 14-8. Asencio Soriano ended the run with a kill, starting a 3-0 run for the Rangers, cutting the deficit in half. Northwestern kept slowly closing the deficit, getting it down to two at 14-16 and 15-17 and finally 18-20. However Oklahoma Baptist ended this set strongly with a 5-0 run to take the opening set 25-18 and a 1-0 match lead.
SET TWO:Â
The Bison opened set number two with back to back service aces taking a 2-0 lead for the second straight set by Asencio Soriano started the scoring once more for the Rangers. Ascencio Soriano kept the Rangers within one following a kill making it 7-6. The Bison then went for two big runs first a 7-2 run eventually opening a 19-12 lead over the Rangers. Oklahoma Baptist extended their lead to double digits at 23-13 following a 6-1 run. The Bison closed out a set two victory 25-15 over the Rangers to win the second set and take a 2-0 lead over Northwestern.
SET THREE:Â
Oklahoma Baptist opened with the first two points of the set before Macy Shreffler rattled off a kill assisted by Jimenez as the Rangers were on the board. Northwestern went for three straight points finished off by a Ascencio Soriano kill taking a 5-4 lead over the Bison. After the set was tied at 6-6, the Bison went for a 7-1 run taking a 13-7 lead over the Rangers. A block by Carmae Jones stopped the run as the Rangers looked to build off the block but Oklahoma Baptist continued to hold the lead now at 16-10. With the Rangers trailing 17-11 a block by Jimenez started the big Ranger run as Northwestern climbed back to tie the score at 18-18 following the 7-1 run. Ascencio Soriano finished off the kill that tied the set. Oklahoma Baptist answered back taking the lead 21-19. The Rangers were not going anywhere though with three straight points back at the Bison to take a 21-21 tie following a block by Carmae Jones. Following a block by Jones and Ozdemir to tie the set at 23-23 Ozdemir finished off a kill through the Bison defense to take a 24-23 lead. Northwestern was able to close out the set win following back to back points to win 28-26. Macy Shreffler gave the Rangers the lead with a kill followed by a kill from Ascencio Soriano to win both assisted by Davis.Â
SET FOUR:Â
In the fourth set Shreffler evened the score with a kill to tie at 1-1. With it tied 2-2 the Bison went for four straight points taking a 6-2 lead following back to back blocks. Asencio Soriano was able to end the run with a kill following a timeout. Northwestern came storming back after trailing 9-6 to tie the score at 10-10 following a couple Bison errors. Northwestern continued the run with two straight kills by Jimenez to take a 12-10 lead. Oklahoma Baptist quickly tied the set at 13-13. The Bison then took the lead back at 16-14. As the Rangers trailed 19-18 a kill by Ozdemir started a 4-0 run as the Rangers took a 21-19 over the Bison looking to even the match score. However with the Bison down three out of the timeout the home team went on a 5-0 run to grab the lead back at 23-21 over the Rangers. Oklahoma Baptist did not lose the lead again as they finished off the set with a 25-23 victory over the Rangers and a 3-1 match win.Â
Northwestern will return home for two home games, the final two of the season, first on Tuesday October 31st against Southern Nazarene before hosting East Central for the final home game on November 2nd.Â
