Northwestern Softball Splits Opening Day Doubleheader

ARKADELPHIA, ARKANSAS - Northwestern Oklahoma State opened their 2023 season with a Friday doubleheader. The Rangers split the afternoon with a 7-1 loss to Missouri Southern following that game up with a 7-0 shutout victory over Northeastern State.

The Rangers are now 1-1 on the season following the two games.

GAME ONE:

In the first game Ireland Caro received the start for the Rangers throwing three innings before turning the ball Shakyrah Gladness for the final four innings of work.

Offensively the Rangers finished with five hits all from different players with their RBI being from Hannah Howell and the run scored from Jaci Oakley.

Missouri Southern started the game with a four run four hit first inning. They started by having their first three runners reach base safely before an RBI single scored two runs from Williams followed by a 2-RBI single from Amos.

Northwestern was able to respond partially with a one run inning to get on the board. It started by an Oakley walk before advancing to second and coming around to score on an RBI single from Howell.

Missouri Southern used a leadoff walk and a stolen base to sent them up for their fifth run of the game on a Tofpi RBI single. The Rangers were held scoreless in their half of the second.

A single turned into a stolen base before Perro came around to score on an RBI double by Thurman to take a 6-1 lead over the Rangers. The lead was later extended to 7-1 on a solo home run.

The Rangers had a few scoring chances as in their half of the third inning pushed runners on second and third in the inning before a strike out followed by a ground out had the Rangers fall short of scoring.
