ALVA, OKLAHOMA - Northwestern Oklahoma State baseball closed out their opening weekend series against Metropolitan State Roadrunners Sunday afternoon. The Roadrunners jumped out early before closing out the 11-6 victory and taking the weekend series.
Northwestern falls to 0-3 on the season as Metropolitan improves to 3-0 in the early goings.
Northwestern's offense was led by Hagen Barcello with two hits and two runs scored. Joseph Frisby had two hits to tie the team lead. Colby Grace led the team with 2-RBI's in the loss Sunday.Â
After the Rangers went down in order, Metropolitan State scored a run on two hits. Following a lead off single and walk Williams hit a double to right center field, pushing across the first run of the afternoon between both teams. DeHaas was able to escape further damage and keep it to one.Â
The Rangers wasted no time tying the game back up though as Brayden Koenig hit a solo home run to start the second inning. Northwestern had two other runners reach safely but were unable to score as the game remained 1-1 through two innings.Â
The Roadrunners had a leadoff triple in the third inning from Schultz as he scored making the game 2-1 off a groundout by Albaugh. Four batters later following two singles Schuler hit a three run home run to open a 5-1 lead over Northwestern through the opening three innings.Â
Northwestern was ready to battle back though as Barcello led off the inning with a walk before the Rangers loaded the bases. Hayden Priest hit a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Barcello. The next batter Colby Grace ripped a double to left center field, pushing across two more runs in Gavin Mendoza and Shaughn Kelly as the Rangers trailed 5-4 after their half of the third inning.Â
The game remained 5-4 into the bottom of the 5th inning when Metropolitan extended their lead. After retiring the first two batters in order on a fly out followed by a strike out, two walks led to a three run home run by Stone extending the home team's lead to 8-4. Smith extended their lead to 9-4 with the team's third home run of the afternoon.Â
With the game 10-4 in the 8th inning Northwestern grabbed two runs in the inning. Joseph Frisby started the inning with a leadoff single before a Barcello double to left center brought Frisby home to score. Koenig followed with a walk before Priest knocked him in on a play to the first baseman.Â
Metropolitan State was able to get one back in the bottom half of the 8th inning before closing the win out in the 9th inning over the Rangers.Â
Northwestern will have their home opener on Tuesday afternoon against Newman University with first pitch scheduled for 2:00 PM.Â
