WICHITA, KANSAS - Northwestern Oklahoma State completed the doubleheader sweep over the Jets on Tuesday afternoon. After winning game one by a final of 9-4 the Rangers carried the momentum into game two with a 10-1 win in five innings.
The wins bring the Rangers to 10-8 on the season with a 2-4 conference record.Â
Rachel Sherwood helped lead the Rangers too the two victories with 10-RBIs and eight hits between the two games.Â
GAME ONE:Â
Rangers looked to score early with three straight singles with one out but the Jets pitching was able to escape with no damage allowed. Newman got one in the bottom of the inning after a single and two walks loaded the bases before a hit scored a run but the Ranger defense threw the runner out at third.Â
Northwestern wasted no time answering back with four runs in the second inning as a single and walk set up a runner in scoring position before Macy Spearman reached on an error as Winter scored. Rachel Sherwood followed with a 2-RBI double to left field scoring Clark and Spearman for a 3-1 lead. The fourth run was scored on a single by Hannah Howell.Â
After a scoreless third for the Rangers the Jets struck again in their half of the inning on an RBI double by Bonython.Â
Northwestern again struck with an answer in the fourth inning extending their lead to 6-2. Avery Clark singled leading to a Rachel Sherwood RBI triple to left center field, and came around to score later in the inning on a Jet error.Â
Newman got one back in the fourth inning after a McNaught walk to lead off the inning, and stole second led to a Rodriguez triple.Â
Rachel Sherwood in the sixth hit a single following a lead off walk. This led to an RBI single by Shayanna Stopp. Tautm Winters then drew a bases loaded walk for an 8-4 lead heading into the seventh and final inning.
Sherwood again extended the Ranger lead after a walk and Macy Spearman stealing this led to a sacrifice fly hit by Sherwood. Ireland Caro closed out the game in the 6th and 7th innings for the Rangers to hold on to game one victory.Â
GAME TWO:
The Rangers offense continued from where the team left off in game one as Macy Spearman and Avery Clark each reached safely before a Rachel Sherwood RBI single scored Spearman for the early 1-0 lead.
Caro was able to work around a two out double to keep the Rangers in front 1-0 before extending the lead in the second inning. After two hit batters and a walk to Avery Clark loaded the bases before Rachel Sherwood delivered a bases clearing triple, scoring Clark, Spearman, and Stopp for a 4-0 lead. Hannah Howell followed with a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Sherwood.Â
Newman was able to grab one back in the second inning as Rodriguez singled to center field, scoring Borja. In the Ranger half of the third inning Northwestern again extended the lead after Macy Spearman hit a double a batter after Cam Alexander did the same to score Alexander for the 6-1 lead. Sherwood then delivered an RBI double for a 7-1 lead.Â
Newman looking to get a run back put runners on first and third but were unable to score as Caro worked around the jam. The game remained 7-1 into the fifth inning.Â
Northwestern had second and third nobody out following a hit batter and a double. Devynn Raile and Cameron Alexander came around to score on an error by the Jets. Sherwood drove in the final run of the day on an RBI single for a 10-1 Ranger lead.Â
In the home half of the 5th Ireland Caro retired the Jets in order for the 10-1 five inning victory.Â
Northwestern will return to conference play on Friday and Saturday against Southern Nazarene with first pitch on Friday at 3:00 PM before a Saturday doubleheader.Â
