ALVA, OKLAHOMA - Northwestern Oklahoma State Women's Volleyball extended their win streak to six games following a comeback win in both sets four and five to steal the victory over Southeastern. The Rangers closed the match with ten straight points after trailing 12-5 to win the set five 15-12 and win the five set match 3-2 to remain unbeaten in conference play.
The Rangers now 9-5 on the season with a 3-0 Great American Conference record while Southeastern drops to 4-8 on the year with a 1-2 record in conference.Â
Northwestern led in kills by Erika Asencio Soriano with 16, Mariela Jimenez with 14, Hennesys Lalane with 44 assists, Brianda Diaz had 24 digs, with Asencio Soriano with 17.Â
SET ONE:Â
Rangers jumped out early on Southeastern Oklahoma State taking an early 3-1 lead following two blocks by Ivanny Blackwood and Ece Ozdemir on the first one followed by Macy Shreffler and Mariela Jimenez. Briand Diaz rattled off a service ace to complete the 3-0 run. Southeastern struck back tying the set at 7-7 but Erika Asencio Soriano had back to back kills keeping the Rangers out in front at 9-8. The set continued as the teams battled back and forth before Southeastern took a slight lead at 16-14. Asencio Soriano started a 4-0 Ranger run to take a 19-17 lead late in the first set. A block by Ivanny Blackwood and Hennesys Lalane kept the momentum in the Rangers favor. Northwestern continued to lead at 23-20 before a late run by the Savage Storm finishing the set with five straight points stole the opening set from the Rangers and snapping the 15 consecutive set streak won by the Rangers. Southeastern won the first set 25-23 and took a 1-0 match lead.Â
SET TWO:Â
The Rangers looking to bounce back did just that in set two as Macy Shreffler opened the scoring with back to back kills both assisted by Lalane for two of her 44 in the match. The Rangers taking advantage of some errors on the opposing side pushed the lead to 10-3 following kills by Ozdemir along with two service aces. The Rangers continued to add on and pushed the lead to double digits at 16-6 following a kill by Asencio Soriano. Three straight kills, one each from Shreffler, Ozdemir and Lalane had the Rangers in front 22-10. Two kills by Jimenez and a kill by Asencio Soriano evened the match at 1-1 following the 25-14 set victory.Â
SET THREE:Â
Southeastern Oklahoma State had the first point of set three looking to take the match lead back. The two teams battled through three ties in the early going of the set locked at 9-9. Ece Ozdemir gave the Rangers a 10-9 lead following a kill. Northwestern was out in front 13-11 when the Savage Storm battled back with six straight points and seven of the next eight opening a 19-14 lead over the Rangers. After the Rangers ended the run Southeastern responded with five straight for a 24-15 lead eventually closing out the set 25-17 and taking a 2-1 match lead over the Rangers.Â
SET FOUR:Â
After two quick ties to start the set Southeastern scored four straight, building an 8-4 lead over the Rangers and eventually a 15-7 lead as Northwestern trailed. A block by Erika Ascensio Soriano switched the momentum as the Rangers had three straight points to bring it to a 15-10 set. Following a kill of her own Ozdemir kept the comeback going with a service ace before A kill by Macy Shreffler through the Savage Storm defense tied the set. Carmae Jones and Ece Ozdemir then had a big block giving the Rangers the lead at 23-22. Shreffler closed out the set by firing a kill assisted by Hennesys Lalane as the Rangers won set four and evened the match 2-2 following the 25-23 win.Â
SET FIVE:Â
Rangers looking to close out the comeback started the fifth set off strongly with a monster block by Carmae Jones for a 2-0 early lead. Southeastern scored three straight from there to take a 3-2 lead but a kill by Ece Ozdemir tied the set. Southeastern then jumped out to a 12-5 lead following eight straight points. The Rangers though were able to weather the Storm as down 12-5 came back to rattle off ten straight points. Mariela Jimenez started the run with a kill assisted by Lalane. Erika Asencio Soriano kept the momentum with the Rangers with a giant block along with Mariela Jimenez before three straight kills by Asencio Soriano. This brought the Rangers back within one. A point later after the Rangers tied the set Asencio Soriano blasted a kill to give the Rangers the lead at 13-12. The Rangers showed no signs of slowing down as a service ace by Ozdemir followed by a Mariela Jimenez and Erika Asencio Soriano block sealed the comeback victory as the Rangers remained perfect in conference play.Â
Northwestern Oklahoma State Volleyball will be back home on Tuesday, October 1st against Southwestern Oklahoma State with the scheduled start time at 6:00 PM.
