ENID, Okla. – The Northwestern golf teams fell short against Southwestern in the 2nd annual Perkins Cup, with the Bulldogs winning, 9-6. The Perkins Cup features medal match play, where each Ranger is paired up against a Bulldog, and whoever wins the head-to-head matchup adds one point to their team's total. Out of the ten men's matches, the Rangers had an even 5-5 split with Southwestern, while the Bulldogs won the women's matches, 4-1.
On the men's side, the Rangers dropped the first three matches, but
Aspen Hopper started the rally by finishing seven up on his opponent, as he finished with 70, including three birdies. The Rangers held steady in the middle rounds, as
Chris Xiao shot 71 to win his matchup by three strokes.
Southwestern held a 5-2 lead into the eighth match, but
Pierce Geminden started the rally by winning his matchup by two strokes thanks to four birdies, including one in hole nine that solidified his lead.
Zac Farmer took the ninth match of the day by two strokes with a score of 69, as he quickly recovered from a three-stroke deficit and flipped the momentum of the match with an eagle in the 10th hole.
Matti Zerwin completed the comeback with 70, as he finished with a two-stroke victory to secure the tie.
Tess Linden recorded the only victory on the women's side, as she recorded 78 to win by two strokes.
The Northwestern men's golf team will be back in action on October 20th, as they head to the Shangri-La Country Club in Afton, Oklahoma for the MSSU Men's Fall Invitational hosted by Missouri Southern State University.
The Northwestern women's golf team will head to Tulsa on October 27th, as they compete for the Tulsa Cup at The Club at Forest Ridge hosted by Rogers State University.
