LAS VEGAS, NEW MEXICO - Northwestern Oklahoma State baseball traveled to Las Vegas, New Mexico for a four game weekend series.The Rangers started the weekend with a 7-4 victory over the Cowboys. Northwestern scored in the three final innings of the game to seal the win.
The Rangers improved to 5-1 on the season following the win.
Northwestern offense was led by Connor Green with three hits in the game while scoring two runs and driving in three runs. Harley Shaffer finished with two hits, a run and an RBI in the win.
Rangers jumped out early after Dylan Bradford reached base safely and stole second before Barcello drove in a run for the 1-0 lead. The next batter Connor Green hit a 2-run home run for the 3-0 first-inning lead.Â
The Cowboys respond though in the home half of the first inning with a three-spot of their own. New Mexico Highlands started with a single and a double before a 2-RBI single cut the Ranger lead to 3-2. Galfano doubled down the right field line to tie the game at 3-3 after the first inning as the next hitter was a fly out to left field.Â
Northwestern looking to strike back got two base runners in the inning on two hit batters but were not able to score. Ranger starter Jacob Fuller settled in after the first inning to throw five straight scoreless innings while striking out six New Mexico Highland hitters later earning the win.Â
It was the seventh inning when the Rangers broke the tie as Chase Gordon led the inning off with a walk before later scoring on a sacrifice fly by Connor Green for the 4-3 lead. That was the Rangers. Northwestern worked out of a jam in the bottom of the seventh inning as Jacob Shaw struck out the final hitter looking to keep the game 4-3 in favor of the Rangers.Â
Paul Sachen led the eighth inning off with a walk before Shaffer doubled to right field to give the Rangers a 5-3 lead, scoring Sachen. The Rangers were not done there though as Dylan Bradford later hit a sacrifice fly to right field scoring Shaffer for the 6-3 lead.Â
In the ninth inning, the Rangers and Cowboys traded runs as Chad Green hit an RBI single to give the Rangers the four-run lead.Â
After New Mexico Highlands scored a run on an O'Neil RBI double to score a fourth run, the Rangers closed out the 7-4 victory, as Jacob Shaw earned the save.Â
The Rangers play a doubleheader on Saturday with the first game scheduled to start at 1:00 PM CT against the Cowboys.
