ALVA, Okla. – The Northwestern Oklahoma State baseball team swept their doubleheader against East Central on Saturday, give the Rangers all three wins in the series. The wins move the Rangers to 9-11 on the season and 3-6 in Great American Conference play.
Game 1
The Rangers found themselves in an early hole, as the Tigers in the top of the first to take a 1-0 lead, but the Rangers immediately got in scoring position in the bottom of the inning as
Alex Dabrowski drew a leadoff walk and stole second. Dabrowski moved to third on a groundout from
Amari Goodfellow, but the Tigers kept the lead at the end of the first inning. The Rangers put another runner in scoring position in the bottom of the second, as
Joel Lindahl got aboard with a walk and
Matthew Bailey ripped a single into left field, but the Rangers could not bring them home.
The Rangers rallied in the fourth to tie the game, as Hogan and
Chase Gordon drew walks and
Jason McCarty laced a single to left field to bring Hogan home to move the score to 1-1 through four. The Northwestern rally continued into the next inning, as
Cole Barton broke the tie in the bottom of the fifth with a solo shot to put the Rangers ahead, 2-1.
Northwestern struck again in the sixth, as Hogan and Bailey got on base via walks before
Chase Gordon hammered a double to bring Hogan home. The Rangers plated another run with McCarty drawing a walk and
Jailon Goodfellow grounding out to bring Bailey home and give the Rangers a 4-1 lead. In the bottom of the eighth, Dabrowski doubled to left center field and
Jailon Goodfellow singled up the middle to extend Northwestern's lead to the final score of 5-1.
Seven different Rangers recorded a hit in the game, with
Jailon Goodfellow leading in RBI with two.
Logan Sandoval threw his second complete game of the season with three strikeouts in nine innings of work on only 98 pitches for his second win of the season.
Game 2
The Rangers struck first in the bottom of the first, as Dabrowski and
Jailon Goodfellow drew back-to-back walks before
Amari Goodfellow and Barton grounded out on consecutive at-bats to bring Dabrowski home and give Northwestern a 1-0 lead. East Central tacked on a run in the top of the second, and the game turned into a pitchers' duel, as the Rangers didn't get a runner in scoring position until the bottom of the seventh, when Lindahl ripped a double down the right field line, followed by an intentional walk to
DJ Barrett. The Rangers could not bring them home, bringing the game to extra innings.
Dabrowski started a rally in the bottom of the eighth inning with a double down the right field line, but he ended up stranded at second.
Amari Goodfellow opened the bottom of the ninth by reaching on an error, with Lindahl drawing an intentional walk, but the Rangers could not bring them home. In the bottom of the 10
th, Bailey singled to left field and moved to second on a sacrifice fly from Gordon, and
Trey Gray drew a walk to put runners on first and second before Dabrowski grounded into a double play to end the inning.
Jailon Goodfellow started the bottom of the 11
th with a walk, and
Brandon Jennings singled and advanced on an error to bring
Jailon Goodfellow home to score the winning run to give Northwestern the 2-1 victory.
The Rangers will be back in action on March 4, when they take on Washburn University at Myers Stadium at 3 p.m.
